Dropping signs in orbit?

I got to thinking about server play, and I'm wondering, can players drop a pod/beacon/probe thing in orbit around a planet and use it to display a custom message? I'm basically thinking of the space equivalent to those little wooden signs you can put outside of a base or castle that tend to say things like "Jake's place", or "Don't touch please" or things like that? I was thinking it'd be pretty cool to pick a planet and drop a probe in orbit saying something like "Jen's Planet of Awesome" or, "Please don't touch anything on this planet, it's been converted to a priceless art museum!"

Not that I know of. You can suggest it in the Suggestions sub-forum, if you like. Just be sure to include plenty of detail, as there's nothing more likely to turn people away from an idea than a vague description.

I think it would be hard to find these signs or even how we would see them. Since there will be billions of planets in the universe, chances of 20 or so players to come across it pretty slim. Corrected me if I am wrong though.

EDIT: Yeah just in case, I know you can give people your loction to come to you. But I just don't see how signs will be see able. It seems the space shuttle and earth already take the whole screen up.

Given that when you initially beam down to a planet it will be to the same location, then surely it is as simple as putting a sign on the planet at that point, rather than in space.

I'd eat at Bob's, he sounds like a friendly dude/alien dude...I haven't heard anything about it so it probably isn't in the game at the moment but saying that, I doubt it would be that hard to include it in the game.

You should put this in the suggestions forum so that it gets added to the suggestion bot

you can pan the screen around when in your ship--at least they've done it on the dev streams.

This is a great idea. Drop a sign out front in front of the cockpit and you can leave notes there about what can be found on the planet.

Personally I'd just use them to put 8=D all over my friend's solar system. I wonder if you could see them from the planet's surface?

I noticed that when you hover over a planet the FTL Travel menu displays a difficulty tier for the planet as well as the dominant biome. It would be nice to be able to add a custom message to this screen with some notes on the planet. Possibly like: "Tier 1: Boss defeated here" or "Beware the killer rabbits" or "Made entirely of gold". This is better than actually needing to travel to the planet as so far that seems to take quite some time to do.

This plays into the larger question of how we will be able to effectively keep track of all the planets we visit. It may be very hard to remember that one planet you visited with the cool mobs, especially when you've already been to hundreds of planets. Hopefully the devs will implement a robust system that tracks every planet you've ever been to (even if you didn't use your own ship to get there) as well as a way to save "favorite" planets for quick reference. Otherwise I'm going to have to keep a journal or text document containing all the coordinates I've been to and some note of what I found there.

It is a distinct possibility that something like this is already in the game that they aren't showing yet. There seems to be quite a few things they're keeping under wraps for anti-spoilery reasons.

It would be very rare (nearly impossible) to accidentally "find" someone else's home planet even if every single Starbound player was on the same server. Someone did the math earlier, and even if everyone was playing on the same server and constantly flying from planet to planet with no pauses, it'd take something like 70 years for each planet to be visited. In the rare case someone actually saw my planet, I wouldn't want a sign basically saying "HEY COME RAID ME". However, even with signs, it would be virtually impossible to find other people's homes unless they gave you general cords.

I like the fact it's so easy to hide even on a very populated server:
    - They have click on your planet, out of billions of planets, and then travel there.
    - They would then have to stumble upon your base, when they most likely didn't even realize there was one on the planet.
    - If you hide your base, even in the 1 in a billion chance someone comes to your planet, they probably will walk right by it.

I wouldn't mind being able to rename planets or make orbit signs, but it definitely need to be optional. Possibly allow us to choose if we want them to be public/private, so other people will still see the default planet name in case you wish to remain stealthy.

Of course placing a sign in orbit would be optional. Much like it's optional to place a block on the planet, or place a door on a house you're building, or place a crafting bench. I don't even see how they could plausibly force you to place a sign.
