Drills

Discussion in 'Starbound Discussion' started by ethanator2008, Dec 14, 2013.

  1. What is the difference between pickaxes and drills, other than the cost to craft one?

    As you mentioned, drills cost a lot more to craft. Why? Because they are higher tier items that can only be crafted later on in the game. And I heard drills are a little bit faster than pickaxes, which would make sense. However, I do not think they are fast enough to make too much of a difference. Is the cost for the extra speed worth it? No. But why not if you have extra materials and pixels on you right?

    I've tested the difference between drills and pickaxes, and I'd say that drills aren't currently worth it. Both mine the same amount of blocks, and the platinum drill is only marginally faster than the diamond pickaxe on even the hardest of blocks. I just like the drill because pickaxes are so last millennium.

    I lol'd.

    Do both have durability?

    Yes, and both can be repaired in the same way.

    ^This; I have not thoroughly tested it, but I THINK that it may be easier to repair drills. Someone would have to check me on that.

    It has kind of felt that way so far

    I can repair my platinum drill from about half durability to full with only like 3-4 copper ores

    Diamond PIckaxe durability: 7500
    Diamond Drill durability: 3000
    Diamond Pickaxe tile damage: 2.7
    Diamond Drill tile damage: 3.7

    Diamond drill works approximately 40% faster, but also has 40% the durability. Repairs are per durability point though, so it costs the same to repair for the same number of blocks mined.

    Drills should just be a straight upgrade to pickaxes. An automated tool with shape in mind as opposed to a stick with a rock tied to it should last longer. In addition, you need to be very far in the game to get drills, so it makes even more sense for them to be an upgrade instead of sidegrade.

    It's likely just place holder data. I wouldn't worry about it.

    You're repairing the same amount with the same amount of ores either way, you're just doing it more often with the drill.

    I'm almost 100% sure drills are going to be far superior to pickaxes. It makes sense, seeing as how you unlock them far later in the game, they cost almost quadruple the cost of pickaxes, and you have to upgrade them drill by drill much like the pickaxe upgrade.

    Since when is 2.5 times more "almost quadruple?"

    I've been pretty satisfied with my diamond drill. It's especially handy when dealing with cobblestone.

    Diamond pickaxe costs= 8 diamonds, 1.6k pixels
    Diamond drill costs= 20 diamonds, 6.4k pixels

    1.6x4=6.4
    8x4=32

    Quadruple the pixel cost, almost triple the diamond cost. Not counting stacked costs from previous upgrades.

    Didn't know that's how it worked. Tools should only be repairable by the materials they're made of, which means platinum ores for platinum drills, in that case.

    I was considering only raw material costs, not pixels. Pixels are trivial to get. As soon as I had access to drills, I had enough pixels to get all of them, I only had to spend time getting platinum and diamond. And yeah, 2.5 rounds up to 3, but that's hardly "almost triple." It's two and a half times.

    Now, I do think drills should mine quite a bit faster than they do. Maybe increase their speed by 50% so that the diamond drill mines 60% faster than the diamond pick.

    Pixels are (much to my chagrin) a raw material cost. I had to grind for the pixel cost of the platinum and diamond as well, so I would very much count them when saying quadruple cost.
    That's 4 less diamonds. I'd say that's pretty close to "almost triple".

    I would've taken my own life if it weren't for the drills. The difference is slight, but slight enough to make a difference.

    I have to admit, I find the pixel cost weird.
    It'd make sense if I didn't have all the materials, but.. I do.

    I won't get into it here (because I will derail on this subject) but I am very much against the idea of pixels being a raw crafting material. You don't use money to smelt metal bars into armor, etc. etc.
