Drills vs Pickaxes: The universal idiots argument. TL;DR

Quite possible, but that falls under a margin of speculation a bit too far. We want to base it off as many proper facts that we know,
failing that we must leave it up to the developers. We cannot force them to do anything, and by all, we should respect their

    decision ultimately.

Also, this is set supposedly in our own timeline (The future) so it is all very much dependent.

Well, see, I don't understand the point in using the names of metals we know if they don't share the same properties. They already made up the names of the later metals. So it's completely reasonable to assume that metals in this game would reflect the metals of the real world if they share the same name. Gold and Silver should be reserved for electrical components of machines/computers we make.

    I agree, so should copper.

Sorry to make you think that I was degrading your work in some respect. I believe you put great effort into this and that you deserve credit, but comments like this one:

    "*rolls eyes* Yes, yes, it all comes down to 0's and 1's at the end of the day, but I'd expect you to understand the difference between gameplay mechanics and lore."{O}

-Besides being highly condescending, and rude no less, you really should stop swapping the two (Lore, gameplay mechanics) only when its convenient.

Don't contribute much to the discussion and seem just like flat out accusations and a personal vendetta.

The one in quotes is what the person said, I was replying that it was rude an uncalled for.
If you take issue with that I frankly must say that i couldn't care less.

I was merely stating that it was inappropriate. I have no personal problem with it, other than that it slightly feels like ad hominem.

I am sorry if I offended you as it was not my intention. Related to the subject I just think that the Matter Manipulator is too cool a name for a tool to never be used. Either way you can still make another tool that operates on the same technology (like the line gun works in comparison to the laser cutter in dead space)

It's called a matter manipulator. it manipulates matter, just slowly. Fits fine in my opinion

I believe it's there simply so you can do thing without having tools, instead of punching them like minecraft does.

How is discussing an issue "hyperdramatic"?

We're not being hyper dramatic, this thread simply carries a lot of tension from the previous, but we are being calm and civilized so far. Don't know what's the reason of complaint really.

    Exactly

I do believe that to some people, its either cursing and swearing to be cool, or not saying anything at all.
Reasoned discussion is out of the question, and there must always be wit involved, and not the productive
    kind.

Funny how you ask that in a thread that was meant to be long, and took the author a long ass time to not only write,
but look through the forum that this thread references, and answer each and every question.
But sure, since obviously no effort was put into this:

    TLDR

Since you didn't bother to read the thread, you cannot argue any points against this.
You must read the thread to be considered worth debate.

Drills are realistic, and as useful as pickaxes, or any other item.
The current system of items by the devs work fine.

dont see anything to argue with
    seems perfectly reasonable
    i agree

  16. Horizons Reach

    Horizons Reach Void-Bound Voyager

Well thats perfect then, but some people come here to argue points against the thread,
and I wholeheartedly invite them to actually read the thread, because usually shit they say
    is answered there.

So what is the point of this?, Starbound isn't even near to be finished so why bother about a fictional universe with only speculations?

(btw sorry for my bad english)

The point is to respond to people who are against drills.
This thread is meant to state that the current system is fine, and
that we should leave it to the deveolpers.

    TL:DR version -

Drills. People care a lot, and are willing to be pedantic when arguing about it. Not to say that there were not well thought out arguments about it on either side, but that they are a bit overblown for something that is - for better or worse - a simple pick upgrade at this point. The devs will either change it or they won't, and Starbound will be a fabulously fun game regardless.
