Drill Feedback

I just got drills last night and I have some comments about it.

After some testing I confirmed that they're quite a bit faster at mining than the picks. The thing for me is they didn't pop out and feel different. It felt like I just got a better mining pick and I wasn't using something different to mine. It would be cool if they did something different to really set them apart from the mining picks so you really feel like you took a big jump in your mining ability.

I know they were originally 2x2. Maybe go nuts and have them mine 4x4, or keep them 3x3 but greatly increase the dig speed. As it stands right now they just feel like better picks and I think there's a missed opportunity to have them really stand out as you progress to them.

I suppose they should be set back to 2x2, but mining speed should be increased A LOT by increasing the amount of "hits" over the set amount of time.

I'd like if they mined 4x4 so i can mine horizontaly in one go.

Or what LightHoof said could also work.

I think if they made the animation a little more visible it would help with that feeling. I love my diamond drill, especially with sand and snow =)

Or maybe if they pierced the heavens somehow?

But seriously, I think mining at the current rate, but maybe 4x4 would be great just like Shackram said. Mining horizontally right now is a chore, so 4x4 mining would add a big feel of improvement over the current drill.

If 4x4 feels like too much for some people, 2x4 could always work. It would let us mine horizontally without cursor movement, without mining too much at once.

The drill is odd, in that by the time you unlock it you just might have all the materials to craft the diamond drill right away, except perhaps for the pixel cost but the refinery provided that for me very quickly. It kind of makes all of the other drills a bit redundant outside of being used to craft the diamond one.

Now that I have the diamond drill it's also just kind of, well, like the OP says it just feels like another pick axe. Giving the animation some oomph can help in some way. I don't know how you could differentiate the tools however, short of just making the pick worse, the drill better or both.

Making the drill mine 4x4 might be a bit too strong, mining is already kinda fast once you get to that tier, and afaik we've got more tools to come in the future. Ionno.

    I suppose that could work!

Do we know if there are going to be legendary variants of the tools?

A diamond drill actually digs out a ton faster than a diamond pickaxe and sicnerelly, that's all I wanted from it. Farming ores is one hell of a fast process once you reach it. I'd just go on and say the pixel costs are rather stupid, but I guess that's rather obvious.

I always thought they'd be an alternative to the pickaxe. I liked the idea of them digging 2x2. You could either go for speed with the drill or volume with the pick, but right now the drill is obviously completely better. Also, I dislike the current implementation, I had enough resources to immediately craft the diamond drill, the other ones were totally pointless.

That was my experience, too. By the time I was able to make drills, I had so much ore I was able to build a copper drill and immediately upgrade it all the way up.

I favor the 4x4 or 2x4 drilling pattern. It's tedious to drill sideways, especially if you're trying to do nice straight tunnels.

Not a big fan of the drills, as far as I know you can't repair them so once they are done you've got to craft a whole new set of drills to get another one. A pick axe you can simply repair with ore, if they have changed it so you can repair the drill let me know please.

You can repair drills just like the pickaxes. I've repaired my titanium drill I dunno how many times.

I repair my diamond drill from no durability to max with like 4 copper ores max.

Wait, you repair your diamond drill with copper ore?

You can repair your solid diamond pickaxe with copper, so the drill is no surprise. The durability system is not particularly concerned with making sense right now. I suppose it will change eventually.

Ya know, I keep on suggesting that they add a "TOGGLE" feature where you can toggle your mining and placing sizes. It makes even more sense with drills if you consider toggling the drill area as basically changing drill bits. I wouldn't even mind if they actually made "recipe" we can find to give us various sizes. 1x1 (toggle instead of hold), 2x2, 3x3, 2x3, 4x2, 2x4, 4x4. Seems like a very simple thing to implement.

A little off topic, but I'd love to see a toggle too for block placing grids. Why not a 1x2 or 1x3 to make placing lines easier than 1x1 or nothing? Why not Tetris type block placements?

You forgot diagonal template, like 1x4, for easier diagonal digging.
