Ok, how do I deal with this guy now? I have full titanium gear and a massive sword and guns, but every time I try to fight him he just swoops me to death, I can't dodge it, and it does around 20 damage every time, he's only ever slammed once in the ten times I've tried, the rest of the time he is just swooping me to death.

Dash and jump at the same time, then hit your double-jump to go farther. That will get you away from his swoop. Or you can just cheat while the cheating is good: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/can-kill-dreadwing-without-engaging.87350/

Pan your camera up (hold ctrl) to get a clear view of him and position yourself directly below him so that rather than swooping, he does his "slam" attack and smashes into the floor. Before he slams he makes a fairly obvious telegraph where he'll pause in mid air briefly - make a timed parry or block (use a two handed sword or sword + shield for melee) and you'll negate the damage from the slam and can clobber him while he recovers.

At around 25% health he'll start doing a teleport/slam combo, again when you see him teleport, be ready to parry his slam attack. Rinse and repeat. A rapid fire ranged weapon is a good way of keeping any adds in check, the basic penguins don't have much HP so something like a pulse rifle or needler can be used to "sweep" the area quickly.

Shield. Time your blocks for when he's about to hit, and hack at him with a 1h sword. Use guns for when he distances himself.

I beat him by crafting the Iron Hunting Bow and hiding in my little home base. I kept charging up my shots and shooting from little holes in the sides and top. It takes a while, but its the least riskiest.

EDIT: If you're talking about the unstable Dreadwing, I have no idea how to beat him. If you're talking about the distress beacon Dreadwing, then I was correct.

There are two spots where Dreadwing can't touch you when he swoops down. They're both spots with some water and some kind of surelevated floor around. Dreadwing can't go low enough and you can kill him easily. He can still kill you by shooting things, though.

or take a sword an shield an hit him when he is on the ground. when he is flying block the fire with the shield.
and he talks of dreadwing in the unstable because the best armor is titanium when you face him.

At first I was also having a lot of trouble with Dreadwing because I was trying to kill him with my rifle, I think the easiest way to beat him is to use a shield. Once I started using a shield it got really easy, while he was in the air I'd take potshots with my pistol blocking shots and swoops as necessary, and then when he'd slam I'd pull out my two handed sword and start wailing on him. Once he started summoning reinforcements I'd just focus on them until he decided to slam again. Time your blocks and take care of the adds, and you should be fine.
