Hello my fellow Spacemonkeys and -Birds and... Flowers... Gasbags and so on... ;)

I updated Starbound (unstable) just yesterday and saw, since April (last time i played) and now (July), there were many changes, including the (Side-)Quests.

I started a new game, new charakter, played the intro... and finaly i came to the "Outpost". I looked around find some Quests and one of them was the good old "Dreadwing" Quest.

I thought okay... He was the second boss after that fat cristal in the Lunar Base... so i skipped it...

Now i have the Tungsten Armorset and i thought... second set, former second boss so.. lets try it...

It was a big fail ^^
    More then one time

Can it be, that he is stronger now? Or have i thinking errors, and i have to wait a little longer for next armor and weapon tier?

And is it just an development error that i can fight against him that early in game? Or do i only play bad?

I don't think it is a development error. He is an optional side boss so he can be a great deal harder than a boss that is part of the main story like the Erchius Horror.

I found the fight to see how well you can dodge attacks and a DPS check at the same time since in the second phase, all the additional adds can really overwhelm you.

His basic attack pattern is easy enough. The adds are what amps up the difficulty so if you can output enough damage to quickly kill them, you should be in good shape as long as you get used to dodging or blocking his attacks.

Yeah, he's harder than before. I beat him in 2nd Tungsten-level approach, with a rifle and heavy use of air dash. Also had to use quite a few salves. I used melee weapon on penguins.

Also, the mini-builiding around the teleporter work nice as a shield against his projectiles.

I've only attempted him at iron level... the first set of armor... I just didn't do enough damage, but managed to get him down to almost half. Reminds me of when I first fought him in Giraffe Version. Each attempt will be better than the last. For me though it was not dreadwing that killed me, it was his lackies that he continuously spawned. I couldn't off those quick enough. Was quite understandable though, considering the tier I pretty much have for equipment.

Food, bandages, salves, 2h hander, spear (with a neat whirling blast), and a shield... Like type-luna mentions, it is all about dodging. To some extent you could use the initial teleporter thing to have partial cover from dreadwing, but be warned being flooded with his lackies if you try too early... I usually clear lackies all up to where he starts attacking. Then I went back to there for cover. In fact I was fighting him along the way, and didn't find out about that lil' cover spot till I reached it; So i used it the best I could before I got swarmed.

He is about as tough as he was initially in Giraffe. I like that; just means I will have to have a few attempts to off him. Granted I am going to wait till I have better equipment though. :nurutease:

    Thank you for answering ^^

I just wondered why you can battle a sideboss this strong at this early phase of the game. But if you say that it has to be that strong, then i have no worries anymore ^^

Well it opens up another way to hire crew members... penguins... So probably why. :nurutease: That is if I remember correctly.

Do the penguins have the same functionality as regular crew members though? You know, inspecting things and what not.

I don't really know, I haven't beaten dreadwing yet... I just know that is what you get from that place, or well what unlocks it. Don't really plan on hiring them, as that would be costly... deblooms are not common. >< Reasoning I am going for a colony to give me recruits.

However I would imagine they do to some extent, like any other npc that joins your cause. Now what types that you will be able to hire, I haven't a clue.:nurutease:

Is Dreadwing REALLY a challenge? You make me want to try it before it gets released.

@The MechE Well for me he is... Then again I was trying him in iron armor tier... So that could be why; however if you remember the early Giraffe unstable of him, then you might know how difficult, as that is roughly about the level of difficulty.

For me 50-50, as I know I can beat him, I just need a more powerful weapon or upgrade to armor. I mean I got him down to almost half health... The main thing that killed me though wasn't dreadwing; so theoretically dreadwing himself is not so difficult, it is the swarm of penguins he drops off that makes it a bit... overwhelming. I couldn't 1-2 shot any of those. At least 2 shot would be fine for me. I actually like that he aparently I guess is titanium tier... Well according to someone else that has beaten him with that.

that is the basic run down. It was only challenging for me due to what equipment I had on me.:nuruhappy:

Dreadwing wasn't difficult though. He died in like 4-5 hammer swings.

4-5? I needed quite a good number of sword hits after I dodged his ram or slam attacks before I killed him. What equipment tier were you using or do hammers have a specific effectiveness against him? Or was it an attribute thing?

Any way, it just meant your DPS was high enough to quickly proceed through the fight since he is a boss that gets harder the longer the fight drags on, mainly on the second phase. The third phase gets easier as the air adds he spawns are easier to deal with than the ground adds.

I find that odd. Considering the early one the only way it would take that many is if you had a way powerful weapon that wasn't of tier.

I do remember there being an update after the difficult one that made him too easy then they made him difficult... It was back n forth. But one the of the first Giraffe he was. The one I am referring to is the one before it went stable before that... Basically it was before the erchius horrer came to be. That one didn't take 4-5 hammer hits unless you had an overpowered weapon in the first place. Then again I mainly said challenging as he is not easy or hard. Just takes a while... Time wise.

Like I said before this is my own experience, and I can say iron tier will not be the tier he is, and I think as mentioned before titanium might be his tier, but you can fight him practically from the beginning.

Dreadwing is dreadwing regardless, and I am no expert at combat. He was one of my favorites in Giraffe to fight. So I guess he is same challenge as he always has been, especially if you know the tactics to beat him. :nuruhappy:
