This only works when the background still shows the surface and not deeper underground. All you do is go to a water source that locates on a surface and partly under the ground, dig the wall where the water is and witness the water draining out the blank wall magically.

The destroyed wall acts as a hole where the water flows 'out', so if only a part is destroyed, the water flows out till exactly on level with the bottom part of the destroyed wall

I'm pretty sure the idea behind this is that the water is draining out of that hole and that it's intentional unless you're low enough where there is an unbreakable "wall" of cave stone.

I thought of that too but the idea is simply ridiculous, it does not happen in Terraria, so I just felt like pointing out really. Just in case.

This is meant to be implemented and honestly makes a more linear world and can assist with the hours of toiling to get rid of water. Also, this game is not based on Terraria any more than the similar graphics. The two are quite different.

The only problem is, if you run out of water, that's it... It's gone...

Hopefully they'll add some sort of bucket/water carry system and it can reproduced for a reasonable amount in the 3D printer because I definitely understand where you're coming from; I like decorating with water myself.

This does not always work for some reason. Sometimes, even if you destroy all the background blocks that the water touches, the water will not drain.

this was as feature, but yes, there are ways to capture liquids still under development

    This is by-design.

Honestly, now, how thick do you think the developers would have to be to implement a reasonably complex mechanism like this as a bug?

It used to in Terraria 1.0.5. After they changed it, it stopped. It's been a lifesaver on a planet where all of the water is poisonous.

Seems like it would be more work to STOP the liquid from behaving this way, given that the backdrop is just another set of blocks, if the liquid behaviour is "look around and drop to the height of the lowest adjacent block."

But I don't think I've seen any of this code in the streams.

it checks for "open sources" which provide "sunlight"

I always keep a supply of "gravel" or "fine sand" handy.

Try dumping some into a pool of water. =)
