DPS vs Damage Per Swing

It means damage perswing. i play some rpg/mmo games like world of Warcraft and i know that dps stands for that. it might be different on this game but i'm just trying to do my part to help.

Exactly. This is why we really need elemental, poison, etc damage to stack like Dots in other MMO's. It would actually give higher swing speed, lower reach weapons a function.

To be fair, it's quite useful to know the DPS when weapons are procedurally generated.

DPS is fine. You don't need the game to tell you the DPS of a weapon, you can figure it out yourself with math. The game gives you damage per swing and how often it swings, and from there you can figure out how much damage you can do per second. You could kind of figure it out with the armor penetration system. If you'd rather go with a weapon that is slow and hits hard, then stick with that weapon. If you'd like the faster, go for the faster. Some people don't care about either, they just want a weapon that does more damage faster.

Can people please stop saying MMO / Diablo-like? It doesn't matter what the game / type is ...

Damage Per Second is important when you're using a weapon that does sustained damage over a period of time. In other words, any weapon that has an auto or constant fire / swing / proc is best suited for Damage Per Second . It's not always the best way to determine if another weapon is better or worse, but a large majority of the time it is the single easiest way. For that reason, Damage Per Second is pretty much the standardized metric for any game. It's all about making things easy to learn but hard to master.

The way melee works in Starbound is that a 'projectile' is still produced - it just has a low range; therefore, Damage Per Second is actually a good fit and would be quite accurate if the melee weapon had auto / constant swing. Getting back to "easy to learn but hard to master", it's up to the user to decide what they want to care about. If they need a hard hitting first attack, instead of sustained potential, Damage Per Second is not the metric they should favor.

Learn to choose the best for the scenario, but don't claim it doesn't matter... because it does.

DPS should absolutely not be removed from weapon tooltip. If you don't like it, don't factor it in to your decision about whether or not to use the weapon! For many more "hardcore" players of starbound, this likely will become a very useful stat.

I think you just want your games to be shallow so you don't have to think much.

Come on. Really? Do you think the presence of the mention of DPS, in Starbound nothing more than a thought-saving tool of dubious utility, makes the game more complex?

And I'd expect you, or anyone randomly intent on making assumptions about my character, to at the very least read my post history before flinging comments like that.

Hint: You're barking entirely up the wrong tree.

I want damage per second, damage per swing, any elemental or poison damage, base damage. I went damage ranges for bows. I want MORE information not less. Including a set of tool-tip customization options would solve this dilemma though. You know - just a tab in gameplay options where you check which stats you want listed in all tool tips? This would satisfy everyone yes?

I'm fine with having DPS listed, but there is so much more information that's important such as the range of the weapon and the kind of arc it has when you swing it. The way it is now, the only way to tell if a weapon is really useful you need to try it out to see how it swings. DPS is nice, but there's more you need to take into account than just sheer damage output.

I don't care if it's there or not, as long as they don't start tacking on even more useless information to the weapon description pane.

And there's a very skewed conception here of basic DPS being a good marker to judge from. I like hammers and for hammers DPS is absolutely USELESS.
Take this for example, which happend today. I open a box and found a new hammer and a new axe. The Axe had a dps of 56, while the hammer had a dps of 38. One would immediately think "Omg what a fucking USELESS hammer" but guess what.... I use it exclusively because I look at the other stats. The axe has a dmg per swing of 32, swing speed 1.75.... hammer? Swing speed 0.51, but a dmg per swing of 74... 74!!!! All I gotta do is not MISS the thing and it dies in one hit! Why on earth why I pick the axe when I can just one shot everything?!

DPS is misleading. It's unnecessary information, and for it to listed at the top of the description pane makes it even more misleading as it then appears to be the main stat. And not everyone knows what DPS even stands for. Someone up above here said "It stands for Damage per Swing"....... If it stands for that in WoW, then just ... wow.

    1. It's not misleading if you understand what damage per second means.
    2. What is necessary is totally subjective.
    3. One of the stats should be on top, should we really argue over that?
    4. People can learn what DPS means when both DPS and damage per swing are listed right by each other.
    5. Again - aren't all of these problems and confusions solved by having a menu to tweak tooltip options?

That was an edit so you may have missed it, but, yes, I do recognize my own opinion as non-fact. I figured while we were all ranting about our opinions, I'd join in on the fun. ;)

It's 'Damage per Second', not 'Damage per Swing'.

High DPS is always a good indication of the weapon's damage output in a long, drawn-out combat. For most purposes, though, you should also consider other factors.

    I agree with this.

My only issue with DPS is its location, I'd prefer base damage at the top, and other damage related values below it, but that's just personal preference (Which obviously trumps everybody else's preference, and you should all just agree with me [/sarcasm]).

No reason the order in the options couldn't be arranged. Or perhaps a 'Primary stat' tagged to be in top and bold.

Removing a potentially useful statistic in order to cater to dullards would be ridiculous. It's not as though the amount of statistics makes it difficult to compare weapons. I don't gauge weapons by their DPS in this game, but I don't see any point in removing it when there are already so few stats. Personally I'd like to see MORE things listed; it's annoying that elemental effects don't show their stats in the inventory.

That said, the nomenclature is obviously confusing to some players. I think it would be worth spelling out "Damage Per Second" or changing "Damage Per Swing" to "Damage Per Hit."

Isn't DPS "damage per second"? Because it seems to be (and usually that acronym means that).

This means that the weapon does an amount of damage per swing, and that it does an amount of damage per second if you keep swinging it and hitting. This also means that if you compare two weapons with the same damage per swing, the faster weapon will do more DPS, thus being a better weapon (though this is not always the case, as faster weapons tend to be weaker).

I don't see anything wrong or complicated in that. It's just the base damage, added to how many times you swing the weapon and hit.

    DPS = DAMAGE PER SECOND

1 minute has 60 SECONDS on PLANET EARTH

(Min damage + Max damage)/2 = average damage

average damage * attacks amount per second = DAMAGE PER SECOND

    ((47+64)/2)*0,2^-1 = 277,5 average DPS

    47*0,2^-1 = 235 minimum DPS
    64*0,2^-1 = 320 maximum DPS

    min-max DPS:
    235~320 DPS

    1 attack per second = 1 s CD
    2 attacks per second = 0,50 s CD
    3 attack per second = 0,3 s CD
    4 APS = 0,25 s cd
    5 APS = 0,20 s CD

attack per second ^-1 = cooldown between attacks

starbound has a bit different system , hit is applied after animation , which means u damage is done after animation and that means

cooldown attack cooldown = first attack

maximum attack speed in starbound is about 3~4 attack per second for standart / melee weapons , even if description says 192 atks per second or swings or anything else , U WONT BE ABLE TO atk faster , reason for it CODING , ask admin who coded lastly for 19 hour and failed , he know how his code works so he can explain WHY u cant attack faster , also maximum attack possible in RIGHT coding can not surpass 60 attack per second , so no matter what idiots would tell ur maximum for attack speed is 60 swings per second , despite the fact that u will see only standing character and frozen animation , human eye can see 20~trained 25~30 frames per second for more info > google

this factor aplies ONLY if there is NO DEFENSE FACTOR , IF THERE IS NO AIM FACTOR , IF THERE IS NO REDUCTION FACTOR , AND ONLY IF THIS DAMAGE IS LOCKED ON = ADDED CONSTANTLY (no factors that would affect cool down or anything else)

if u dont undestand this :
kick forum observer in the nuts or run against the wall

this is math CLASS 1 pre elementary mathematics

another thing i can suggest u is if u dont understand it , u wont be able to get best weapon , so i just suggest you just get weapon that hit at most
THAT MEANS DAMAGE PER HIT not second , in weapon description of starbound its lowest factor right now , learn to deal with it and u will be good
-all other tricks will be closed to your brain until you reach level of understanding more complex things(although it elementary crap)
