Don't impose imaginary combat limitations please

    But you're still just as slow holding it up at all, so holding it up makes no sense. what I am saying is I have this large hunk of metal equipped. i hold it up and all of the sudden I'm much slower. It doesn't make sense.

    Personally though I think that penalty should come from misusing the shield, not imposed by default
    My proposed changes cover that, the shield is useful, but less useful if you just charge at the enemy instead of blocking a hit using skill. Additionally it simulates the tiring by using up energy.

    Personally I'd rather have a parry mechanic for all the other weapons so you can choose, perfect timing for defense or slowing down and holding a slab of mythical equipment to block attacks. That and I want my character to cut bullets with his laser sword >~>

    True. That would probably be a better system for the shield. We should get that suggestion rolling out.

    Yep. Spam shield button for total invulnerability!
    And a cooldown would make it useless agaisnt fast weapons. Nope.

    That was the easiest like I've ever spent. The last thing I have to say on the topic is that I'm looking forward to getting some shield tooltips fleshed out!

    Ahaha that sounds terrible! I had a bit more of a timing based idea going on in my head really, where if you did it too soon it wouldn't count. I just like throwing timing and skill curves into places whether they really belong there or not. It probably doesn't help that I come from a background of very technical fighting games :(

    I'm playing an action platformer RPG. one thing I really hate is when devs impose artificial limitations that just don't make any sense for your character to have. anything that makes my character feel like i have lost control over a ridiculous reason makes it harder for me to enjoy the experience of playing in that style.

    Alright, what suggestions do you have to properly balance shields? As it stands they are on the strong side and lack a real drawback, so I'd love to hear your ideas!

    go do some research on how encumbrance works. even in reality, holding a shield in a defensive manner slows you down, while having it at rest barely affects you (if at all).

    i edited my post btw, i was too hostile with that middle statement.

    also, funny fact about shield usage- part of what slows you down when you take the defensive stance is purely psychological.

    I have held a real shield. both at my side and in a defensive manor while moving. it did slow me down a little bit, but not very different. so I have done the research. In the game it works completely unrealistic, and is just artificial imposition.

    I see. Eh. Still works. Also, yeah its kind of odd that it is psychological. But if that part is also in this game that would make it a lot different as well.

    agreed, and also, give me the same protection as when I'm not holding it up...

    It's called bracing yourself friend! Let's see you brace for a blow while you're skipping along on uneven terrain. This game is meant to be a combat simulator and I don't appreciate everyone trying to dumb it down.

    Shield up? SLOW! Shield down? FASTER!

    When you held this hypothetical shield of yours, was there a nightmarish creature in front of you waiting to lunge and attack you? No? Hmmm our data sample for this research project could probably use some more details. ;)
