Don't impose imaginary combat limitations please

    while holding up a shield my character slows down slightly. Please remove that. all it does is make me feel like I'm not in proper control of my character.

    Sacrificing speed for defense when holding a shield is a classic.

    Be that as it may, all it does is make my character more sluggish, and makes no sense. I still say it should be removed.

    I disagree. Better games than Starbound have the exact same mechanic and tradeoff. For pete's sake you slow down a little to basically become INVINCIBLE towards anything attacking from the direction you're facing providing the shield is from that sector.

    I don't see how that doesn't make sense. Go carry a big piece of metal and tell me it did not slow you down. It makes sense in a game like this that a shield would slow you down.

    It represents the character taking a more careful, defensive posture. I see no problem with it.

    I dunno, if I own a huge shield and am in the face of something I believe I need to block, chances are I'm going to slow down and be a bit careful. Anyways as it stands the speed reduction is fine imo - shields are all about letting the enemy come to you and then counter attack them when you've got the few frames of blocking invulnerability. I feel like if you are just dashing into the enemy with a shield equipped you are doing it wrong?

    shields are too good already. if they didnt slow you down you'd just keep it up at all times

    well then make it slow me down while I'm not holding it up too, and I won't complain about it.

    Sure. We could make a suggestion on that. I think the devs would be more than happy to make that change.

    i think slowing down while holding the shield up makes sense, could be even slower imo
    but i wouldnt make the player slower for just having a shield equipped

    Proposed change: if walking with a shield up while being hit the defensive bonus is half the default one
    Additionally you always slow down while holding a shield

    Holding a shield IN front of you constantly is a lot more tiring then holding it by your side and running >_>

    I say nerf the shield 80% and buff its speed.

    Nevermind the whole weight debacle, why are you even using a shield if you don't want to play defensively? plenty of options for aggression! My personal favorite is a grenade launcher in one hand and a fast swinging shortblade in the other to push back enemies that get too close while im trying to bomb them.

    Proposed further change: make shield holding slowly drain energy, blocking a hit drains a larger chunk of energy

    I was running around with two one-handers since I had nothing else. Was fun. But yeah shields are for defensive actions and should have some penalty.

    oh a thought on balancing the shield - we could nerf it heavily and then give it a just-defend mechanic where you get a lot of armor if you raise it just before taking damage. I loved that mechanic in street fighter third strike... >.>

    Lets let them finish balancing the tier system before we talk about any nerfing that needs to be done.
