Does water not cushion falling damage?

I dug a straight tunnel down to the bottom of my planet. Then I filled the bottom area that I dug with about 3 characters in height, of water. When I tested it from not even half way up, I died instantly when I hit the water.

This didn't used to happen. Did they make water not cushion falling damage anymore???

I think you need more water. 3 characters in height isn't enough.

To make water cushion you need water to be above your character height
But the best way is to just make a rain and go down with it
    It periodicly works

Even better, if you have a lot of water and keep dumping it over your head - you can swim up your own waterfall! Useful for getting out of pits.

And yeah, it has to be a lot deeper if you're dying to it.

Well...IRL water makes a terrible landing cushion. Being incompressible and all...

Yeah, just use eyeballs instead. Any block which has proper physics is great for descending huge heights, since you can just ride on top of it.

fall damage is based on momentum when you hit the solid ground. You need enough to slow the character down, just being in water isn't enough.

I've had the Floran mission kill me because I hopped down into the pool and the water failed to load before I hit the ground and died. :D

Otherwise, yeah, doesn't sound like there was enough water for it to slow your character down and prevent fall damage.

Just add (more) water. Characters are ~4 blocks tall, so your pit sounds only about 12 blocks deep; you'll definitely need more water than that to fall safely from terminal velocity.
