I don't know if I ever asked but does starbound have farming or alchemy or both?

There's farming, but no alchemy as such. Expect it to be modded in.

Oh yeah in that case yeah it most likely will be modded in. I wish they'd announce the beta date already.

Well there are consumables in the game maybe not potions per say but food and stuff and we know there is cooking. There will be plenty of crafting, but game is more futuristic and alchemy is more fantasy.

Chemistry is more likely, as alchemy is generally associated with magic, which Starbound does not have.

Alchemy.. Now that's a mod I'd like to see!

Yeah, there is no alchemy as we know it, but if Minecraft and Terraria are any indication of Mods we can expect, then Alchemy,, MLP, Mob addons, and any Technology that Devs may have missed or thought were OP... Think automated farms and such.

I can only imagine all the things you can do with a chemistry set, an open universe and and a loaf of poisonous banana bread.

I don't want alchemy in Starbound because that's magic, and magic doesn't belong in this game. However, the comment about chemistry could more or less do the trick and it would totally fit in with the science feeling of the game. Basically...it's semantics. Alchemy is unto fantasy as chemistry is unto science fiction.

Yea, I'd love to see chemistry and potions, or things like that. But that role could be filled by technology and gadgets, I guess. We'll have to wait and see :p

I always kind of thought Alchemy was a mixture of pseudo-science and inner-self discovery. If you are thinking of stuff like FullMetal Alchemist then yes, it claims science but has roots more on a realm of magic.

I have to disagree on that, or at least in regards to alchemy. Yes, it's related to mysticism and such, but I don't see the practice of it in Starbound any less valid than science or religious belief. I mean... the Avian believe in a god that may or may not even exist, their lives seemingly ruled by these beliefs and ritual practices - so much so that people have died and tried to escape! Their religion may or may not be a complete hoax, we won't know until the game's release, but it still stands that there's absolutely a place for it. I don't think 'magic' then would be any less out of place, even if it's simply the pursuit of powers beyond scientific understanding.

TL;DR - just because something is science fiction, I don't believe that means it needs to be purely scientific. :)

Cooking is just chemistry with edible ingredients! And as food gives status effects, it's already close to how alchemy is used in most games (with the added bonus of being tasty and filling your food bar). So I'd rather the cooking mechanic be expanded than add alchemy or chemistry as something seperate.

However, if you wanted to cook up some explosives, might be safer to have a chemistry lab, rather than get it mixed up with your grilled cheese. The way some of my friends cook tho - it might not be all that difficult to end up baking something that would be better off on the 'equipment' list than the food list.

Well, to be fair, magic could be explained by science I suppose. But there is a definite chasm for the most part between the worlds of fantasy and science fiction. So, while alchemy and chemistry are definite interlinguistic cognates, their usage and premise differ typically. With alchemy, you can use mostly organic ingredients to create potions and poisons in many games (such as in Skyrim), or other archaic practices that are not centered around technology such as the transmutation of base metals into gold or other materials. Alchemy seems to fit into the era circa 600 AD to the 17th century, plus a lot of lore connects it to magic (which seems to be the most canon from what I've seen). Alchemy is a pseudoscience, as it does not align with scientific method and standards and additionally lacks the consideration (or knowledge) of the Periodic Table of Elements.

Chemistry is an established physical science, grounded in scientific methodology and standards - essentially, it is based on facts. It should be noted that making perfumes and colognes and food coloring or flavoring is quite chemical, and it could be the same in Starbound. Instead of potion making, you could instead create compounds or fluids in IVs that could be administered like a shot instead of quaffed like a potion, or even create ointments or medicines that can be used directly or administered/applied with a device. You could even make poisons/toxins and other harmful materials that could be applied to an item or used in crafting an item with the effect. All of these could use metals and other elements, and even organic things in a way that their benefits could be fortified into something else.

I guess that wasn't really a truly applicable reply to you, as much as to this thread and a little bit to you (you mostly just got me thinking haha). :)

You're certainly right. Though, to me, I'd play a game like this for my sci-fi itch and I wouldn't really want those lines blurred with magic. Sure, some mysticism and Mayan-like sacrifice or god worship is fine (as it may apply to the Avian), but throwing fireballs from your hands, using a sword that summons a pillar of holy light, or casting a poisonous cloud from a staff just wouldn't quite mesh with the game. I'd like to think of how they would do similar things in something like Fallout 3/NV, which does an excellent job in keeping with scientific possibilities, whether it be hard science (completely plausible) or not so hard science. Some strange things happen in those games, but I never thought "huh, well that could never happen!" While I'm thinking, the fireball, light pillar, and poisonous cloud could certainly be done in a sci-fi game in its own way: the fireball could come from special gloves that generate concentrated heat that can be projected to a certain distance, the light pillar could be instead a beam of intense energy (like a laser would be), and the poisonous cloud could be similar to the fireball but instead the emitter creates a toxic gas that chokes the lungs or attacks the nervous system or blood system.

I simply have to give Alchemy its due in real world history. Many scientists we know today actually practiced alchemy, at some point. They had no idea that the world worked the way we know it today, so they theorized and attempted to use scientific method the only way they knew how. And since gold was so valuable the pursuit of it in any form was considered legitimate. I also remember reading that Alchemy was later used as a form of internal discovery, that the "Philosopher's Stone" was about changing one's self with enlightenment, rather then the legendary belief that it was for immortality or some mystical powerhouse of a substance. Eh, call me crazy, but if i were born in the Renaissance Era, i would have probably been swayed by Alchemy formulas over Religion texts.

So we'll settle with queer moves being magic, even though it's called TECH. Meh.
