honeslt its just smart to keep ingots from past armors that you dont need anymore (sence you dont lose those when you die)
and smelt them when you need the money

pretty much this. I tried using it a while ago and I found myself not dying often enough for it to be worth compressing.

I, uhh... got the mod that means you can use the compressor without any loss in pixels :p

So yes, I use it all the time. I have a big crate on my ship full of 10k pixels. I like to live dangerously, so I die a lot.

I got the lossless pixel compressor mod too, and use it all the time.

Why? Because I think the idea of saving your pixels ought to have been a basic, fundamental part of the game's design that somehow got completely overlooked. So the solution, in turn, is to actually make it COST you pixels to save pixels?

Whoever thought that was a good idea needs a quick re-lesson in game design. That's a surefire way to make saving ANYTHING seem completely pointless and never get used.

The cost of dying in single-player is, for me, the loss of everything I have on my person at the time AND a fair chunk of my money. I'd even go so far as to make it ALL of my money, if I could. The decision to compress pixels is, for me, the decision to keep money stashed away for a rainy day over having it easily on-hand while I'm exploring a planet. Since there aren't many uses for it at the moment, it seems a little rigged in my favor, but I've also got a lot of mods which add vending machines and make it so I can populate my colonies with merchants and what-not... so it's still not completely imbalanced.

The vanilla version, however, is something I would never touch. Not once. It's a wasted idea that needs to be fixed, or gutted in favor of simply making pixels an item you carry in your inventory a la Terraria's coins.

No, I am usually in two situations.

I have no pixels because I started afew hours ago, died, and everything is expensive.
I have a crap ton of pixels and hardly die from having all the best stuff and finished "buying" all the crafting I want.

The pixel system as a whole needs a overhaul badly. Not in a lets use it to buy progression way like the AMA seemed to hint, but in a, this is fun to find and use sort of way.
Even minecraft emeralds as pain in the butt that they are to find or trade for, are a better system. Optional, store-able, doesn't get in the way unless you want to mess with it.

Yes! I never found planets with towns and shops and is too dangerous lose the 30% of 20k...

  7. I have voted on yes but considering that I'm playing on permadeath? I won't be using it, there is no point.
You're just wasting pixels that way.
Pixel compressor is totally and utterly useless when playing on that mode.

No, its not. If you save a planet's cords and use that planet as a home world for all your characters. The pixel compressor is the only way to trade pixels to your new characters if your main dies.

Actually I use it quite a few times. I find that no matter how good my gear gets or how much better I get at not dying I always end up dying again for whatever reason it may be (lava, enemies, whatever). The compressor pays back just after the 2nd death at any given point. And yes I keep dying even if not that frequentlly and recon that it always will happen. Plus I guess that eventually the end game will get a lot harder plus the persistent PvP X sector, when in MP means that death might actually still be around the corner, so pillin up a few savins for my constructions feels right.
I have never tried the lossless compressor mod, and although it does sound pretty nice, I feel that the security of saving money / banking should come at a price. Maybe 40% is a bit to stiff however up until now it still convinces me to use it :p

I use it a lot so far! I have a net of about 5000 pixels stored.

Never bothered to use it when I saw it takes away 40% of what goes in. I just have bars/ores ready for the refinery if I need pixels. If I happen to have an excess amount from exploring/killing things, it'll all go into the 3d printer (building a space station and decorating it is insanely expensive!). Since there's no loss from using the refinery, if I wanted to trade money to another character I'd just do so in the form of ores and bars.

Only convert enough for what you need, save the rest. No pixels wasted and ore is plentiful.

Iron is the only one I don't convert as capture pods require steel, which is made from iron.

Save for someone using the pixel compressor as a means of transferring pixels to a new character on permadeath mode... I really don't see a point in the item that isn't addressed by the magical Ore Refinery. I spend all of the pixels that I accumulate through combat on restoring my stock of Cheap Lights from the Pocket Pixel Printer. When I need a huge mass of pixels, I burn diamonds. I often have upwards of 500 diamonds. Sometimes more than 1000. There would be no benefit to storing pixels compared to storing diamonds. 1000 Diamonds in one square is equal to 10,000 pixels. Only, you didn't just lose forty percent of the pixels you put into compression when storing them in the form of an ore such as diamond. I've never known a game with a bank to make you pay money to bank it. So... its basically a completely pointless (in Normal difficulty and single player modes, that is) item that I've never even seen a reason to build, much less use.

Refining ore doesn't mean you can't also compress the pixels you loot..if at the moment one does not have anything to buy with those why risk loosing more pixels with 2 deaths instead of compressing them? Do both..

i have 8000 each of copper, silver and gold. 4000 each of platinum and diamonds and have yet to ever use the refinery. i loot over 100k pixels a day off of mobs, chests and capsules. i spend maybe 30k a day. i compress the rest and have a stash of half a mil. i could care less that its 40% loss. pixels rain from the sky in this game.

i still use it >.< hoarding voxels is better than hoarding 500000000 ore that i'll never use. and when things randomly 1 shot you at any time what else are you going to do with your pixels? i dont really care about the loss because really what costs so much that you care about losing those pixels? nothing. also storing voxxels makes me feel like scrooge mcduck. theyre amazing.

There are literally mods that make money grow on trees.

Not to mention you can just stockpile ores and refine them when you need pixels.

Me and my friend tend to use it on our private server. More so after we built a pixel farm using turrets, then the compression loss wasn't really an issue and we wound up storing the pixels in chests for use later.

I tend to be rather stubborn when I die and rush back into the situation. Hence I never die just once, usually two times in a row (when robbing avian airships anyway) Yeah I could just use blocks and wall everyone off, or completely negate the traps in apex dungeons with them as well but where is the fun in that?

although thinking on it now, the pixel farm generates enough pixels to where we just visit it for a few minutes prior to any big purchases as opposed to farming, compressing, and storing. So yeah maybe it is obsolete.

Compressor is useful. Especially when you remove the 40% cost from refinery. ;)
