Does anyone else get terrible FPS?

I have recently purchased the game for $15 - and I have to say, it was probably the worst $15 I've spent. Now, I don't want people coming here and replying saying, "oh, what lag?" but from what I've heard, it's been happening since the "koala update". I've tried many suggestions and none have worked, I've tried playing multiplayer, steam isn't in compatibility mode, zooming in won't help, and many of the other suggestions won't work. My computer isn't high end, but it runs the game. I'll fetch my specs if anyone wants them. Does anyone else get this lag? Also, when I try to beam up onto the first planet, It shows the beam animation, (like a slideshow though) and I stay on the ship.

Again, don't reply saying "what lag?" because that won't help anyone.

My FPS is around 5-10 just when I spawn...

this doesn't help you but atleast you are not alone

This is a beta so some problems may occur until they fix it, i think next update is a huge one and may fix it, but you could try open gl, worked for me

The game is still under development and needs to be optimized. The current things that are causing your FPS drop are probably trees, enemies, and the background.

If you go downward under the over world portion of the planet all of that will go away and you will gain 60+ fps.

The developers just need to be notified that there are problems with specific parts of the game on lower ending machines and they need to fix them. Keep in mind this is early beta.

Also! OpenGL is just a different version of the game that loads the game differently. If you want to know more about the specifics of how it works you can look that up. But generally speaking if you're having issues with how the game is running, you want to set it to OpenGL. That still won't fix all the issues but it will help.

OpenGL is a completely different driver package to render graphics, audio, etc. I presume the game normally runs in DirectX.

DirectX is Windows-only because it is proprietary, owned by Microsoft. OpenGL is free software that can be adapted to any system. I'm told OpenGL is a little bit "worse" than DirectX in most regards but, obviously, works on any system and not just on Windows; if one doesn't work then try the other.

As for your problem, I've heard that the Steam Overlay (if you're running the game through Steam) can cause lag. You can right-click Starbound in your Steam Library, select Properties, and turn off "Enable Steam Community In-Game". Hope this helps.

I'll chunk my specs in for fun :> Intel Core 2 Duo 2.20ghz, 4gb ram, Win7, Intel Mobile 4500mhd integrated laptop graphics.. I get flawless 60fps onboard the ship after loading, but going to a planets surface leads to eventual lag (lag that doesn't stop, follows me back to the ship and lags me there, and also if I save/reload without exiting the game the CPU usage climbs and climbs til it pegs out at 100%) :p At this point I'm resigned to wait on the (distant) future and the optimizations, as I've tried every fix in the known world ;)

Here's my hideous list of things I've tried up to now..

Heres the list of all the things I've tried so far:

Can disable vsync by opening the CONFIG file with notepad (can possibly set windowed resolution in there, too, didn't mess with it)

Can try that FPS booster Skyrim mod (supposed to use the "Windows Media Player trick", though it didn't help for me)

Can rename the OpenGL launcher to regular Starbound.exe (while safely storing original Starbound.exe in a separate folder)

Disable Steam overlay (really disable ANYTHING fancy Steam has)

Check Steam exe for compatibility modes and disable em if active (mine weren't anyway)

There's a pretty handy program called Memory Cleaner made by a Microsoft guy named Koshy John, small file and its a helpful utility that'll help with all games (it frees up unnecessary memory usage while active)

Can also download and run CCleaner, a program that frees up space by deleting old registry stuff and stored error logs/histories etc..

I even looked into a terrifying program called Throttlestop which allows easy overclocking of your CPU (can end your PC's life if used incorrectly, dl'ed it but didn't use)

Can try setting admin for all starbound exe's and launcher (this is an older fix/idea and since then I believe Bartwe said this is NOT good, DISABLE all administrator stuff etc)

Can try disabling prefetch and superfetch options if you're on Intel.. (its an internal function that pre-loads your most commonly used files, some people say it grants a speed boost, some disagree, its done through regedit but I've forgotten the name of the program! didn't help me, anyway, and did slow me down while disabled..)

People said to try Razor fps booster, but lots of reviews said it doesn't help older systems much, and is generally "clunky", but its still an option (or Game Booster)

Can attempt disabling hyperthreading (google will tell you how, check your CPU first to see if you even have hyperthreading, then read up about it because some newer games do use it, but its generally believed that disabling it helps a majority of games, I don't have hyperthreading though..)

Tried ditching AVG antivirus because it uses more resources than Avast does (but Avast has no firewall and 30-day expiration date, now I'm running avast + windows firewall, no noticed improvement for me though)

Heard google chrome takes less CPU than Internet Exploerer, which would be true except that Chrome opens up like 6 instances in the taskbar instead of the one or two that IE opens..

Can try changing "affinity" or setting priority of the starbound exe you're using to high or realtime through the task manager process

Can try going into regedit users-wndowsNT blah blah blah and deleting all the steam-associated stuff out of app compatibility or whatever (can find real instructions on how in multiple multiple posts on forum) Another thing about the admin settings is to check your Steam desktop shortcut (if you have one) and make sure it doesn't have a four-colored Windows shield on the icon, which means it may still think its administrator..

And the newest one I've recently learned is to try running it without Steam active at all by renaming the Steam.exe to something else and then running (or just closing out of it after launch would work equally well, I suppose).. Another thing is to close the game launcher after the game launches, as the launcher uses a fair bit of memory itself..

I also got modified "Royal BNA" drivers for my Intel GMA 4500mhd graphics card from a site called Teknogods, and they actually DID increase my gaming quality a bit, but after a couple days my internet pages began crashing WAAAAY too often, so I reverted.. Except that at first my laptop couldn't find drivers to reinstall off the net because the modified drivers changed the "identity" of my graphics card :> Did a manual wipe and reinstalled correct drivers by hand after that.. I'm on a Toshiba-modified Intel, so I'm supposed to rely on their drivers, but the most recent ones were in mid-2009 and the newest generic Intel drivers for my card are from 2012 so I'm using them currently.. Can't tell much difference between the two though..

As I said though, none of them cured my specific Starbound stuff :p

I'll try it, but it's my last resort until optimization comes into perspective.

I have a high-end machine and I also had severe lag issues.

This alone helped resolve almost all of it for me.

Just in case some of you don't already know it: Optimization for slower computers is due in phase 2 of the beta. We're in phase 1.
The beta notes explicitly called for people with older hardware to participate in phase 2.

Now, I've also bought it anyway, because I was so curious, but we'll just have to wait for phase 2 if we got lag.

From what I've experienced on my laptop (Which, admittingly isn't a SLOW computer but it isn't the best) I get the best FPS in windowed mode. However, sometimes I've noticed screen tearing in both full screen and windowed mode. I'd love some more graphical options added to the options menu. To fix the screen tearing the only thing I've figured out is you just sort of re-size the window until Starbound gets itself back together.
