I would prefer it if you could craft a "Cursed Gravestone" cosmetic that showed your death to everybody, while on your screen WITHOUT it you would see a ghostly version of yourself lighting up where you died, the ghostly version of yourself would only be there for maybe 5 minutes while the cursed gravestone will be permanent.

    @Samta: I don't really understand what you're trying to say :/

Maybe if there would be enough deaths in an area then there would be put an "danger sign" put in somewhere in the area, to warn people

For me gravestones were k, I don't mind if they'll appear in Starbound or not. There are tons of methods to check the death point. :p

I agree with the OP, I hated gravestones in terraria. As if getting killed by a slime wasn't humiliating enough, they had to put a gravestone there to remind you. But anywayaways, gravestones seemed to just be a huge mess, as you would have tons of gravestones all around your world by the time you were done.

Gravestones are absolutely garbage. All they do is clutter your world and force you to either leave them there or waste your time picking them up and trashing them. They definitely should not be in Starbound, they were bad enough in Terraria.

However, I do think some sort of marker to remind you were you died would be helpful. Maybe not a physical object, but perhaps a corpse that rots away (disintegrates and then the ashes blow away) when you get close enough, or some sort of map marker. Maybe a tool that points you in the direction of your last known death location? Anything other than gravestones or something similar would be fine

Basically what he's saying is that if you died and placed a "cursed" tombstone, whoever looked at your tombstone would see the last minutes of your life.

It's a bit like Demon Souls or Dark Souls(I haven't played either but I know the premise). You find signs of where someone died, and then can see how they died(a ghost version of them pops up, and shows right up until the point they died). This could be useful for avoiding traps.

What I was think is rather a log either on your ship or somewhere on the title screen that says how many times you've died and by what monsters/environmental issues you've been killed from the most.
Because let's face it Gravestones ARE absolute garbage.

    How about instead of gravestones...
holographic projectors! A little disk that sits on the ground/floor EXACTLY (give or take 2-5 blocks) where you died! They project an interchangeable, defaulted cyan, projector field that has a 'battery life' of five minutes, self-destructing after that/when you die again.

I guess, the best idea is temporary gravestones. They'd disappear if you die again (one "natural" gravestone for each player) or exit, but the ones harvested and placed manually are permanent.

I was thinking for a bit, and I realized that there is a very good solution to all this:
A gravestone/holoprojector/corpse, that stays in the spot you died UNTIL you look at it. The moment you look at it, it has 1-5 minutes before it dissapears, giving you time to collect it, but also meaning you will NEVER run into two gravestones in the same location, and also meaning the places you go most often will have little to no gravestones there, because you will see them and they will dissapear :)
I think this solution may be the best, but lets see what other great ideas you guys can come up with.

I like the idea of having holo-markers. Maybe you could craft holo-markers which could be used placed anywhere (as long as they are touching something) that when go off the screen would show you where they are like people on the same team as you in Terraria.
If you die then one would drop then it could point you back to where you died.

But what if someone goes on a random server, dies, and never comes back?

Well, I suppose it could be if anyone sees it, like if I saw your corpse, it would still dissapear after 5 minutes... Or, whevener you go offline it could make your corpse dissapear, which could work out well.

There could be an option when making a server which could set gravestone destruction to be public or server ops + the person whose gravestone it is.

I would imagine the grave stones to be like ROTMG(Realm of the mad god) where if you are like a weak player you have a gravestone that lasts for like 30 seconds but if you have max gear or something you would have a giant gravestone that would last like half an hour to an hour.

I've never played that game, but I've heard of it. Is it free on steam? I honestly can't remember... I was looking through steam games yesterday and saw a video of it, but I didn't bother to get it... So I don't know whether I just didn't bother out of laziness, or it costed money.

I went and tried it out, it's pretty fun lol.
