I was just wondering how people felt about gravestones on terraria, and if starbound has them too, how they would feel about those as well.

Personally, I hated gravestones on terraria. To me, it was just a mess I would have to go and clean up, and then delete, everytime I died. It was expecially bad on multiplayer servers, as they would be all over the place. Of course, gravestones do have some benefits, and could be fixed as well.
The main benefit of gravestones is that it marks your death spot, which could assist you, or your friends, in finding where you had died. This was nice because you could retrieve any money you lost when you died on terraria, without getting lost. Also the little sayings were amusing, giving you a brief laugh, and you could use it as a way to make fun of someone. "Hahah, you died from a blue slime!" And all that.
Of course, the spam of gravestones could be fixed so that the benefits could be added without any of the annoyance. All that would be neccessary is a timer of some sort that would delete your gravestone after a certain amount of time. Another option would be for your gravestone to dissapear if you die again, limiting the gravestones on the world to 1 (or more if you're on multiplayer), which also gives the benefit of stopping you from finding the wrong gravestone.

Edit: Also, some people think gravestones break the immersion of the game, since they just randomly appear out of thin air, which is a bit unrealistic.

All this taken into account, how do YOU feel about gravestones? Just vote at the top and leave a quick post maybe explaining your ideas.
I'm curious to see what people think, as I have found them a constant source of annoyance :p Expecially with my OCD.

Depends on how they do it for whether I like it or not. Gravestones in Terraria served little purpose other than to show that someone died, even though death really wasn't that important. For hardcore characters I could see gravestones as something that actually mattered but otherwise I just saw them as randomly spawned signs with a different texture.

I really don't want to see gravestones that can fill a map if you spam your deaths. Ruins perfectly good landscapes.

I want temporary gravestones. I like having something to mark where I died, and there are, as seen in the tombstone sayings thread, oh so many humorous things you can put on them, but unless they were placed manually I don't want them cluttering up the landscape. Maybe they can disappear when their player dies again, or perhaps just disappear after a set period of time.

Yes, also I suppose it would be possible for the gravestones that you collect and place to stay permanently (for those of you who use gravestones for decoration :p).

As long as they wouldn't pop out of nothing every time I died. That really breaks the immersion of the game if, for example, I'm RPing.
If it's a craftable item, fine by me.

I don't really mind. But not like the ones in Terraria. They would just pile up and continue piling if you died in the same spot. You'd then have to pick them all up and delete them. That really rustled my jimmies.

  7. I liked them in Terraria. They served as markers of how far I got in a new 'area'. Like when I finally got used to skeletons, then stumbled across the underground jungle for the first time. After dying there, I decided to wait and get better equipment before returning. Later on, after I had forgotten about being terrified of wasps, I found my grave again, and was like "oh yeah..."

I suppose that is nice in a way zooey, plus with worlds being so large (even infinite) and there being multiple planets, this effect may be far greater.

Imagine dieing on a difficulty 100 planet as a newb, going back like 4 weeks later and finding your grave... Ah, the nostalgia would be so strong

It would be awsome if say when you died your skelatal remains sat there, and an NPC gravekeeper wanders up after a while and makes it look like he is burring you. THEN the gravestone appears, but only lasts for a set period of time unless you choose to loot it. At this point it becomes a permanant item until you garbage it.

Another use is in PvP they could be like the Ears were in diablo 2, but with more information.

'Giving Death' was killed by 'Guiyran'
His skull was disected by a Phase Blade named 'Phenrey' p.s. Nameing weapons would be awsome

They could become like a trophy that you show off in your humble abode.

Maybe an option to turn them on and off. I mean yes they were annoying, but collecting them all for a giant graves room was amusing.

Ah, I just had an even greater idea! An option in your settings to disable yourself from dropping a gravestone when you die, and also a setting for the server owner that allows/disallows gravestones (to keep people from spam/griefing the world with graves ).

Lol, we posted the same thing at the same time :p

I really liked the gravestones in Terraria, it was something I could look back on to remember the good old times and I would love it if they implemented the same system into Starbound.

As far as "temporary gravestones" work a holo-device or something suitably hand-wavy could work well.

I think if the gravestone only lasts until the players second death it would be fine...

Although having it so when you pick it up and place it it's permanent (like minecraft leaves) would be nice, I enjoyed making graveyards.

I would much rather a "marker" left on a map where you last died. Having a gravestone just appear seems a tad silly to me.

Kind of the premise of my "holograve" idea, basically a tiny device that creates a holographic epitaph and self destructs after a while.

  17. Yes! And it could flicker, like those grave markers at the end of Serenity.

  18. I could care less about gravestones even they break logic by appearing whenever you die.
I find it a tad annoying if you were to die many times in the game and as a result have them everywhere. (Not to mention it can sometimes be a bit embarrassing depending on how you died.)

I think it would be a good idea to have grave stoned, but it should be timed, and maybe a grim reaper burring your body, and then the gravestone appears.

I would rather have the spot I fall in be know not by some marker but by the heaps of dead enemies and the blasted crater left behind.
