Uhh, none of those things are tedious or annoying in anyway. Grinding is generally tedious work that leads to a reward in the end. It's very possible to enjoy grinding. However, Basketball, CoD, and Half-life... Actually, screw it. I'm not trying anymore. Whatever.

Hmm... you know, I think I just might got it. The problem might be in the money system.

Lets think back to Terraria. How often did you ever HAVE to have a certain amount of $$$ to progress? Almost never and ammo was very, (and I mean very) cheap.
I think the problem is that when money is required to progress, it's almost just a cheap way of extending play time. While it may not be a problem for some people, the real question is, should it even exist?

What if we bumped up the price for all in-game shops, made items sellable, and reduced the cost of crafting items down to 0? I see no reason why I NEED to spend money to create a boss spawner, but I can understand why I might need money to buy a slightly better item so that the boss is slightly easier on me, but never required.

It is expected in basketball to run back and forward.
But not expected to Starbound to search for minerals?

Woo buddy, that is some great logic. Next champion chess master right here folks.

Wouldn't the next problem become: "I can't find a merchant!" and then that would be considered a grind too...
The real problem is that the game isn't fully balanced.

Holy shit this annoys me to no end. WHY CAN'T EVERY DUNGEON HAVE A MEANINGFUL CHEST IN MEANINGFUL LOCATIONS!?

Grinding usually leads to a more rewarding experience in the long run. If everything was easy/quick, it just isn't as rewarding.

    So I voted "Depends".

    I don't like chess :/ .

On topic some great logic is searching for minerals is okay till you need the mineral and you cant find any. And you hop to another planet and cant find any. Of course in basketball players have to find their feet and are expected to dig through dirt and stone while hopping between planets to get armor so the other team cant one shot them.

    Oh wait...

Anyways I wont reply further. Its clear the only way you debate is by twisting words. Good day.

But that merchant isn't required to progress. If they made the weapons you can get from the merchant so powerful that it was some of the only means to defeat the boss, then it would be a grind. I should never be stopped in the way because I don't have enough MONIES! Few games have managed to pull off the grind and half the time they make you purposely hate it.

I'm talking about this little bugger right here

When I was a Newb, I had to stop every few feet to kill a monster.
Of course the monsters were easy to kill, but it was so annoying.

They constantly blocked my progress, and I got very little in reward.
Twenty Pixels and some Meat. Gee, thanks.

Then I dig for hours, find a dungeon, and there's nothing there except some floating gems and some pots.
Again, thanks. Really worth the time and effort.

Or killing tons of monsters just to get the leather for the Snow Infantry set, which quickly becomes obsolete once you start encountering enemies with guns.

I'm not so sure what my stance on grinding is, but I will say that grinding in Starbound is seldom worth it in the end.

Please no. All the bad memories. Please, no. :C

The chest can be random as long as the loot isn't too bad, that's fine. But trying so hard to get past something just to get a crappy chest, or no chest at all? Not cool. "Because it has to be random" isn't an excuse for pushing through a dungeon for no loot.

    I don't mind grinding.

Also, why are you asking for an opinion on something that isn't out yet and we don't know exactly how it works?

Because the beta is out and we are seeing the early stages of how the progression in the game is working.

Are you referring to the game itself? I'm pretty sure grinding will be in the complete game in some form similar to how it is in the beta at the moment, so discussing it seems fine to me. Although the "Beta Discussion" forum might've been a better choice for this topic.

But that's how the entire game universe works, it's completely random. If there was a guaranteed chest with good loot in it in every single dungeon, why would anyone ever craft anything, they could just block their way through a dungeon, never fighting anything, grab the chest and be set in an hours time.

I'm talking about the rebalance update. Unless I somehow missed it downloading, it isn't here yet. OP is asking about our opinion on it, and I can't give one, nor can anyone else, without having played it.

    Syris Cosmic Narwhal

The game's universe is not completely random. It's seed based. If you find a planet, and give somebody else the seed (coordinates), they will find the same planet. The loot obviously won't be the same, but I see your point.
Oh, I didn't see that in his post. It does say "come and state your opinion again after the rebalance update", though.
