So heres a poll in regards to grinding for pixels in Starbound. Do you like grinding, or do you not?

Also, if you can, come and state your opinion again after the rebalance update.

    Edit:
Grinding - (of a state) oppressive, tedious, and seemingly without end.

The idea that you're repeating the same action over and over and over again to reach a certain goal.

Why would you grind for pixels anyways? At least I've just managed to get enough pixels as I explore. Even dying every now and then doesn't reduce them enough to make me not able to craft. :O

If it's fun and rewarding, I guess I don't mind it. If it feels like a chore, and I'm doing it more than a coffee factory or generic MMO, then no.

Depends. I like working for upgrades as long as they're worth the effort. If monster drops had a little more variety then no one would really care about the grind.

I myself only ever "like it" whenever it is something completely off to the side... but when its off to the side it's not even grinding anymore.

Say for example I was given a side-quest to purchase a very expensive weapon or toy. I would continue on my merry way like normal, but keep that side-quest in mind.
Say for example you were recently killed by a boss monster, then you'd just might have to rebuild the device or item just to have another chance, which could take a while.

I've gone though all the content currently in the beta and didn't have to grind for pixels once.

I think you need to define what you consider "grinding" in a starbound context.

personally i'd say that grinding implies doing the same content repeatedly, which is not something you ever have to do in starbound.

Pixels are easy to get a hold of, just kill any alien you come across. Raiding NPC villages helps a lot too. I'm never under 2000 pixels.

If at any point I end up having to stop what I'm doing to go kill mob X over and over again for hours, then the game was designed poorly.

Luckily this hasn't been the case here so far, and I've already got the highest tier of gear.

I like a little grinding under two conditions:
    1. The progression is obvious
    2. It doesn't take forever.

I've always been like this. Grinding that takes forever is a no go. I just couldn't bring myself to play the old Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior type games back in the day.

I did die to the tier 3 boss on the first go and lost too many pixels to be able to redo it again. I didn't really mind since I could just go somewhere for an exploration trip and come back to it after I had equipped myself better and gotten some pixels on the side.

Like others have said here, the game is designed so that you don't need to "grind" in order to progress. If you consider this type of exploration as grinding, sandbox games might just not be your thing.

I'd only really call it grinding if I wasn't really enjoying it. Otherwise I'm just playing the game. The pixel cost was a bit silly pre patch, but I think it's at a good place now.

What if it were the tier 2 boss (I never killed the tier 3 boss)? I remember having to grind for another superior brain.

I feel people are playing the game wrong.... There really isn't any grinding for pixels when you just go out and explore a little. once I got the iron sword, i just went to planets exploring and by the time i felt like I should fight the boss, i had over 20k pixels. only took me an hour half + to get that much.

It is grinding though. And it is designed so that you need to mine and such which can take a while. You also need to grind for pixels and other things. I don't mind though as long as it is enjoyable and not frustrating.

I see where you're coming from with this, but like Terraziel said, I would also define grinding by doing a same thing over and over again. This far I haven't had to. I go exploring and nice minerals and pixels just fall into my lap as I go. I guess you can get yourself a different perspective to it and not enjoy it, but that's not me.

What comes to brains, I think you shouldn't rush with creating the bot since it'll be too hard if you go for it straight up when you get the tech. It would be much more viable after roaming the universe and finding cool stuff for a while. By that time you could've already used the brain extractor as a good weapon. The superior brain drop rate doesn't seem that rare anyways. I've seen someone posting a guide where they say "go grind for the brains in some low level planet", but what's the fun in that?

Yeah, it depends on both why you're grinding, the reward that comes out in the end, and how bothersome it is. In Starbound, the grindfest isn't too bad, it's just somewhat of a bother because your time isn't always used grinding efficiently, in the case of ores and other things. I'm fine if the grinding's toned down a bit, but it shouldn't be removed.

Only time I have seen any grinding is when you want to build a house out of special materials.
Otherwise grinding doesn't really exist in a game without a character progression system

"Grinding for pixels" in Starbound doesn't feel like "grinding" at all. Whereas grinding is usually tedious or repetitive, I haven't really had that experience with Starbound because I usually make a lot of pixels by just exploring. Killing monsters that I find and breaking capsules open nets me quite a few thousand pixels with every excursion I make in the Beta sector. You can even use the Refinery to get pixels faster. So I don't feel like I'm "grinding" in Starbound.
