Do you guys think a planet that has been turned into a city is a good idea?

The moon my newest character started on is TINY. Could probably circle it in 3-4 minutes without energy dash, and that's being conservative. I barely broke the surface while mining and hit gravel almost immediately.

I think it would have to be more of a video. It has been on my mind since I first found a settlement because I am a kleptomaniac in this game and I ended up with so many pieces of furniture with my so, so small peni ship that what I plan to do is either make it, then make a video of it or make it into a mod. I prefer the latter since sharing is caring but I don't know if I can modify just a single planet and share that.

If anyone does know the answer to that could you let me know? :3

you should be able to buy just about anything in a city. not only substandard crap.

just make everything slightly overpriced. Like 40% more than what it would be worth anywhere else in the galaxy. Buying ores should cost 5x their refinement cost to encourage you to still mine.

shops should be available selling randomly generated selections of enchanted items/weapons.

and it's not really that hard to do, you just need a script that fits buildings together in a more modular way, including stacking them ontop of each other. Urban biome is pretty much a given eventually, i think.

Would be interesting if they implemented a factions system. Imagine if Apex and Floran were at war, an Apex Civilization would have higher prices or outright be hostile. And have faction relationships change randomly like Mount and Blade.
But.. that's waaaaaaaay in the future, if ever going to happen.

Generally how games work is Alpha is when all the fancy features happen, beta is for balance and testing the game proper, then there's going gold. Note there's also 'release candidates', but those are like Minecraft's 'snapshots', sneak peaks of versions before the version is properly released.

Point being, I'm not sure how much the game will be expanded over what it already is if it's beta. But my idea seems to compliment yours quite well.

While I agree it would be nice in concept (it would) mount and blade takes place on a single planet and you the player are free to step in, or not step in at anytime or even be an unwanted extra element terrorizing everyone. With so much planet hopping in this game it would have to track across the whole galaxy or else it may feel 'fake' since your slate is wiped clean when you switch to a new planet. You can see a solar system by solar system implementation of your idea in Space Pirates vs Zombies.

    I think it's a cool idea, but there's a big flaw.

Isn't it kinda contrary to the entire premise of the game? Aren't we playing survivors/outcasts from civilizaton? Haven't most of the civilizations either been nearly wiped out or corrupted beyond recognition?
Why would this city world exist still? Why wouldn't "survivors" just settle there, instead of trying to survive on planets filled with horrible flesh eating monstrosities?

a large city biome? sounds like it could be cool, but they would probably have to do a lot of programming to make it work right- unless you're just talking about long villages.

I think it could be cool to see, but the lore of the game kinda says that most non-homeworld settlements have been small-time stuff, and most of those homeworlds are...well, our characters had reasons for fleeing them. I'm not saying these wouldn't be cool, I'm just not sure if they fit in with the game's lore.

I say it would need work because that would make my computer commit suicide, maybe once they make it a non issue and had some modular procedural generation of a city biome.

Honestly I feel like they plan on implementing the homeworlds into the game quest wise/story wise or something in that nature. It only makes sense. How can you flee a planet and never find it again? Seems kind of silly to me, though I almost lost my starting planet the other day due to forgetting to set it as home, I could be wrong.

Well I meant more along the lines of randomly changing and being more implemented as 'civilized' Apex at war with 'civilized' Floran might hike prices or outright attack a Floran P.C.
I added 'civilzed' in light of there possibly being outliers.

I'd imagine these cities the OP speaks of would only be for those belonging to the species' "leads". i.e. the Apex overlords. The outliers would simply have small hamlets. Would be cool to see hamlets be always friendly until you attack them, but have cities with better items be more tuned into the actions of the world around them.

Then again, maybe that's more for mods to create when the game is finished. This is well beyond the scope of the devs' vision, I bet.

Is fun to dream, though.

You should really post polls like this in the suggestions forum so they notice it. Cities wouldn't be very hard to implement

It turns this into a different kind of game though. I know we want to all ACT like its not Terraria in space- but it is. its definitely not a 2-d star citizen and its not truly a "space exploration" game. Its a mining game with a twist on world generation.

That said, i would not be opposed to turning this into something more, but i wouldnt keep my hopes up.

An orbital space station would be a way of players accessing the functions of a city, and solves the design issue of having the planet be made unrealistically tiny.

Depending on how the questing system turns out (radiant style quests) it could warrant stuff like space stations or city biomes being added. I feel that Starbound will sit half saddle between a proper RPG and sandbox mining/building game when it's fully finished. At least that's how I hope it ends up.

Perhaps I'm seeing this as more like Minecraft. "Beta" pretty much set their worldgen in stone. Features added afterward weren't as substantial. Once it reached beta, extra features seemed to have rules set that they wouldn't affect things already set when it hit beta. That's.. typically what I thought betas were, even before betas magically became PR devices for companies to throw in with pre-orders (which I'm not saying SB is, though). "Beta" as opposed to "Alpha" indicates to me that large additions will be few and far between, if any.

Same here.. I see SOOOOOOOOOOO much potential for Starbound to be further built upon. Tiy has so many boxes he could open to drastically affect the game for the better and make it more.. organic.

    But.. I'm ranting.

Yes, there is plenty of potential. I think its more likely that its sequel (or knockoffs that are probably being planned now as we speak) will build on the space exploration ideas found in SB. Starbounds block mining infrastructure may be too rigid at this point to do anything too satisfying beyond that. Even Terraria is in need of a true sequel to expand, its not always possible to keep adding new features indefinitely.

Terraria.. well.. I chock that up to devs simply abandoning the game. Bugs and glaring issues going unnoticed.
These devs can still strike while the iron's hot a la Minecraft. Notice now that interest in Minecraft is dying off, the updates are getting slower?

This game has lore that makes it more expandable, though. A mix of savage and SPACE! Literally a span of dark ages and space age.. and it gives the game so much to build on top of

Besides that game coming out "no mans sky", this game Is the only game out based on space exploration and planet exploration. There is no reason for them to slow down and stop like terraria or minecraft. They are working with SPACE. There are no limits or boundaries to space.

This game is limitless, with no rules. I really hope they capitalize on that.
