I see this ability to add the DNA of other creatures to yourself... and I forsee a planet full of people who followed in the footsteps of Bill from the original Pokemon games
DNA mixing? most definately yes! very creative & unique suggestion OP. Just sitting here thinking about all the variable results just blew my mind. Sure hope to see this in game.
Since monsters are generated from a set of premade pieces, the game would detect what pieces the monster you took dna from haves, and randomly swap some of your pieces by pieces of that monster, but still have it looking ´´good``, Skin would be considered a piece. Depending of the number of DNA you add, the number of pieces. If you add 1/4 of Cat DNA to yourself, just 1/4 of your pieces would be swapped. Depending on what pieces you have, some stats would change, and you would rarely receibe a new skill, most of skills would be passive, and rarely some active. What do you think people? Also maybe already swapped pieces wouldnt be swapped again by new DNAs, but certain pieces would merge to make new ones.
So, you could create a type of guard by splicing creatures together and control it? Or have it follow you around like a party member or something?
where did you get that information? a complete copy of your personal DNA is in every single cell of your body. hell, at the starbound tech level they could just take a hair clipping, or some spit. seriously, DNA extraction isn't painful. if they get blood samples for DNA, it isn't any worse than getting a shot. just takes a couple seconds longer.
so the creatures die in pain.....ㅠ_ㅠ why dos the world have to be so cruel guys...... but they don't teleport.....as well as take damage from water...(since squid is involved?)
I propose a recessive genetic system like the one we have in real life. Albinism is determined by a recessive gene, so for the creatures and humans be white (like milk), they have to be recessive and, consequently, albino. Another solution, without the recessive gene system, is simple color mixing: Cyan guy with a Red guy; or a Yellow guy with a Blue guy; or even a Magenta guy with a Green guy. All of these solutions will produce white. However, the recessive way will bring much more reality to the game! Think this: Mendel's system + Recessive system + Mutation system = Perfect Game.
Ooooor, you can just get an blue slime DNA, Red slime DNA and Green Slime DNA and mix them up. You can mix up to 4 creatures up in a single mob/npc/yourself.
Enemy Appearance, like weapons, will be highly variable and generated by the game randomly. However there are a lot of 'static' monsters [50 or so]. Some of the random generated appearances will be less common and offer players a different drop of rarer quality. Enemy appearance can and will affect their behavior. (if it spawns with wings, it may fly or hop higher) So, Enemy Appearance CAN AND WILL AFFECT BEHAVIOR? Well, this makes that maybe this idea has an bit higher chance of being added over time...
