Then again, that would def. imbalance the game (depends).

But, free DLC (which alot of indie devs do and others more or less) is sweet.

I actually just made a comment about this earlier today. I have no problem with DLC in a game like Starbound assuming it's done correctly. Maybe 2 - 3 times a year a very large update to the game for $5 - $10 could really make this game incredible. Let's say the game launches and everyone is happy, but the general consensuses is that more variety of biomes are needed, as well as more variety of creature abilities. If the team could say, "In 4 months we will release a new update for $5 that would effectively triple the biome and creature variables (new blocks, new tree trunks, new foliage, new creature parts and abilities, and anything else that could be improved or added to)", you bet your butt I would be all for it. This benefits everyone in the long run.

Imagine where Terraria could be today had they had a periodic "Chapter" or something similar for $5. It's a perfect example of where a DLC patch could have benefited a game greatly.

I think DLC has been soured for most people due to games like Battlefield 3 and Planetside 2, and for good reason. I fully trust Chucklefish. They clearly aren't trying to rip anyone off and are selling their full release game for somewhere between $10 - $25. In a game like Starbound that is centered around exploration, you need to have constant large updates to keep the exploration and wonderment alive.

What I'm hoping happens, is the team continues to work on updating the game over the next year after launch like they have already suggested. After that, Tiy makes a statement saying the staff can't continue to work for free, so they will be releasing a very large update in several months for $5. This gives the developers a reason to develop and the players a reason to keep playing for the cost of a cup of coffee. I'd like to play Starbound for years, and that's only going to happen if the developers keep adding content.

Again, we aren't talking about buying "Weapon Packs" for $5.99 a piece here. We are talking about the continuing development of the game like it never launched. New weapon stats, new monsters, new biomes, new everything; yea, I'm all for a DLC update every 4 - 6 months.

I honestly wouldn't mind reskins as DLCs, I wouldn't buy them, but anything that doesn't affect gamplay is fine by me.

the problem with paid dlc in this genre is that it's impossible to make one that doesn't split the community. so even though i would - generally speaking - pay for a good dlc, i don't want to see one in starbound.

I think we're moving out of the age of DLC. Now usually people update randomly for free. DLC will probably be rare in the future.

you are HALF right. yes, we are moving out of the age of dlc, but we are moving into the age of microtransactions in 60-bucks-games. at least as far as the big publishers are concerned. whatever makes the most money. as for indie games, they never really arrived in the age of dlc anyway... (except maybe magicka)

Well micro-transactions doesn't have to be bad, and I'm not implying that you said they were bad. Allthough WarZ being a bad game they did do micro-transactions really well, so if all companies do it like that it's fine by me. Although I partially disapprove when it's a 60 dollar game, although I only buy 60 dollar games if it is published by Bethesda so it doesn't affect me much

Thank you. The idea that a game should be in continued development for years to come without any compensation is just ridiculous to me. I have no problem paying for what are essentially "expansions" every several months that would effectively double the features in the game.

Well, your name is love doctor...

You and at least half of the other posters in this thread seem to be confusing micro-transactions with periodic DLC updates. This idea that game companies can continue to develop games years after they have been released for nothing is ridiculous.

I can't speak for the others in support of DLC content, but for me at least, I am referring to continued development after that initial year. Think Minecraft style updates where the game is still developed upon as if it hadn't been released. Very quickly Chucklefish will be in a position where it is not financially feasible to continue supporting the game.

Hm, you're right, eventually they'll need to stop updating because of finances. Oh well/

Side about DLCs, DLCs for SimCity 2013 were found when it was first released. A roman casino DLC, and an electric car company one.

    Yeah, EA sucks.

If there is anyone in favor of micro-transactions or DLCs, as they will NOT be a part of this game, do what I plan on doing and buying multiple copies. Hell you could pay for an additional copy each update if you wanted too. I plan on giving my extras away to friends I know wouldn't pay for the game regardless.

For some people that isn't a problem. They see Starbound just like any other single player game; once completed they will find a new one. I think most people however are hoping for something more. I have played MMORPG's for as long as I can remember starting with Ultima Online, Everquest, and Runescape. I played these games, not for the 1000's of other players, but because of the constant development. I couldn't keep up with the game development of those games back then. Content was added faster than I could play it, and I felt like I could literally play them forever and never get bored. Those games achieved that through subscription fees, which for Starbound would obviously be quite silly.

Like I said in a previous post, a game like Starbound needs continued development a la Minecraft (at least in my opinion). The game launches and creatures have 15 different abilities? Add more. There is only 1 type of wood at launch? Add more. Starbound strives to be a game about exploration and "seeing something new".

Also, I am aware of what Tiy said about continued development over the next year and I think that's expected, but after that I see no problem with periodic paid updates twice a year or so that simply build on an already great game.

Agreed. I plan on buying 2 copies initially for my girlfriend and I, then buying several copies when it's offered on Steam for friends that I know would play, but may not want to buy it themselves.
