Discuss i49 and related material

A thread was recently locked that had discussions I thought should be kept rolling. In interest if the discussion itself, be civil and courteous - but please provide your opinion in full.

I have mixed feelings about i49. A few of you were unhappy with the presentation of the game itself, saying it was not professional and, from what I gather, that they were simply hooligans with a flashy new toy.

Personally, I think that's a great thing to watch since it closely resembled the three main types of players Starbound will likely see. The aloof gamer, the focused gamer, and the joker. Of course these are generalizations, but as far as I could tell what I saw was exactly what I expected. Also some concern about how things were handled, i.e. leaving Molly and Bartwe sitting there with nothing to say when they were prepared.

I've seen a couple complaints floating about concerning Starbound's closeness to Terraria. For me that was never an issue, because I came into this project expecting it to be a better replacement to that game.

Also, some discussion about what was really meant with the "pre-alpha" and "pre-beta" comments at i49, whether you think we're reading too much into such a small detail, or if you think there's something to it.

    Here is some related materiel,

Pictures of devs and booth setup:

Do you have a link to the locked thread? They were playing like they were uploading a video to youtube and not like they were presenting a game I am guessing that's just what they are used to and the devs did not coach them to act a certain way. I agree it was a good way to market to the people there and the streamers the fun of playing together. I still do wish the devs played with them but I am guess they feared more people playing would lead to higher chances of crashing. People just compare by assosiation I only get bothered by people the call a game a clone just because it the same genre. They clarified later that it is alpha and they misspoke due to their nerves. Pre-beta being alpha.

i was happy on how they presented themselves there but i defiantly think that yogscast was a poor selection. I kinda felt bad for Molly and Bart having to watch 1/4 of the audience leave in the 1st 10-20 mins but i was relieved to get a seat ^^
It looked as if they tried to go for the entertaining route but whereas i think most of the people who left were looking for them going into detail about the game.
There was even a kid (6-10?) next to me who said "Mum i don't wanna watch this there not playing it right" n the mum replied "i thought you wanted to watch this? you really love starbound?" (and this sums up the lets play) "not like this" then they left.
    :( sad stuff

Exactly why most of us are saying that it "failed". Normally people go to such events to see games get showcased, what we saw with yogscast was some kind of bad comedy.
    This game is mainly about:
    1)Random
    2)Exploration
    3)Building

What we saw: 3 monkeys mess with each other and making fools of themselves. They didn't even leave the planet, or do the quests right.

I'm not a big fan of the Yogscast to begin with, but the fact that the two of them weren't taking it seriously at all while the third one sort-of tried to keep them on course... yeah it was hard to watch. If I hadn't already been a Starbound fan before watching their rendition of 'Starbound Gameplay' would have turned me off completely.

They can't leave the planet until they beat the boss, and that's the point I watched up to. Was there more after that I missed? D:

I'm in the exact same boat here. I never was into how Yogscast portrays themselves. And while they have a huge subscriber base, they have another issue: they are deeply polarizing. Very few people are neutral about them. They either love them or can't stand them. A bit too much of a risk for me, it's not my game, but they should consider hiring someone with PR experience to temper some of their decisions since none of them have that sort of experience.

Also, the game looked decent in itself, but the spotlight with Yogscast basically cemented my position in never playing with anyone but people I know. Did you see how off track, frustrating, and tedious it was to watch with 2 assholes dicking around the whole time? Well, idiots are everywhere on the internet. You'll probably get that half the time on release. May as well not even bother.

Sadly, not only that, but they seemed relatively unprepared. From what I understand, that was technical problems on i49's part, which I hear no one is particularly happy with. i49 had a LOT of problems this year, but it definitely didn't help Starbound. Sadly, the show on display made about half the people I was trying to have consider the game decide against purchasing. Never a good thing.

Honestly, all this boils down to inexperience in dealing with the consumer. We'll see how it goes from there.

My guess is they didn't leave the planet due to a bug on that build that was crashing the game when you did that.
What they did is have some fun playing a game...add f me right meme here.
They didn't show much more because there is not a lot more to see.
Seeing the 2 demos its clear that the game is far from done. A lot of what was promised is not that yet.

Yogscast spiking the preview play aside, it was at least nice to see the first boss in action.

Makes me wonder if all the bosses are going to be Pengit based.

I'm not sure how this is going to pan out for them. I think most people agree there was some obvious help at the least to the yogscasters to get to things, that was jarring.
Regardless of if you necessarily enjoyed who was playing the game the venue was a little off too. Minecraft people where there for minecraft even from the Yogs.

Now that said when the Yogscast puts the video up on their own site, that maybe where the big benefit itself comes from. That said the actual show itself was.. less then stellar.

No, i just wouldn't prefer repetitive bosses, and penguins with guns and dynamite is a silly thing. Silly things are cool for the first time or two, but if they repeat it's boring.

Bartwe showed that all you need to leave the planet is unrefined wood to use as fuel. So no, they didn't leave the planet because they were outerly clueless and accidentally stumbled upon the boss.

They probably didn't even read the quest, they just hopped down to the planet and fooled around
