After playing around in the new update, I have to wonder if I'm not the only one incredibly disappointed in this update.

The combat is the same; monsters still damage on contact, and you want to try out the 360 aiming but you're using a 2-handed weapon? Well buddy, you're out of luck.

pixel canisters now give 1-2 pixels instead of 6 as before. not only is it not balanced as was mentioned in Molly's post, but they actually made it worse

I could be mistaken but I believe I read somewhere that the object descriptions (N key and click around the map) were updated, I hope I am mistaken because that hasn't been done (still seeing 'pinetree with pinefoliage,' 'prettyflower,' etc.).

If you start a hardcore character and die the next character starts on the same planet, even if it's a different race, and can go get the first character's gear.

These issues, combined with the reported performance issues and lack of keybindings, and lack of functioning merchants and custom beamdown points (both massively requested features - isn't the point of Early Access to get feedback from the community as the game develops?) that have been known to Chucklefish since the April update make me ask, after following here since February 2012:

Chucklefish, what have you guys been doing the past 8 months?

No they don't. Not unless they make an attack animation and that's not their only attack.

You haven't even done any progression and you're already disappointed. How unsurprising

Take it easy. Feedback is feedback, and it's called the unstable branch for a reason.

The 5 aggro mobs I encountered would damage me by touching, even outside their attack animations (the passive ones you can walk right through unless you attack them, as before.)

Well I just walked around my starter planet once and walked right through every mob I found. Only took damage when they made an attack on me not when passing through them.

Weird, perhaps certain body parts have a contact damage property and I just got unlucky on my starter. Other points still stand though :p

Personally I'm amazed anyone can say they're disappointed by this update when it's been out the whole of what, 3 hours? - As someone who's been playing nightly there's no way you've seen the full extent of the new content in 3 hours.

I'm not going to bother progressing while the lag in populated areas and pixel unbalance issues still exist. No point in needless tedium, I have plenty other games to play.

Different strokes for different folks, I personally won't partake either because stable runs sketchy on my relic as it is. I doubt unstable will work on my room full of tape computers that are used to print out a number from a slot.

I love what I see from the Winter Update, from someone who was not keeping up with the Nightly builds (I wanted to play through the next actual update as intended). I've not seem a mob damage me by touching yet, but I won't discount your experience... perhaps it is a glitch of some sort. So far, the progression seems much, much smoother as well as the combat and overall gameplay. Also, the merchants you seek can be found in a spaceport after you finish up the tutorial missions on your starting planet.

I've not had a pixel problem at all, either. Then again, I've only died once or twice.... the game seems to be more forgiving now.

The only issue I've had so far is some Performance issue... I have a fairly high-end machine and have still seen some FPS drops in some areas, but nothing unplayable. There was also one bug I found that was quite amusing... I found a mushroom-man merchant who sold guns, and I realized that every team I bought / looked at a gun in his inventory, it would reroll. I literally bought 10 of the same gun in a row and got 10 different pistols (speaking of which, this was the only time I found myself low on pixels xD).

Personally I don't think you're giving it a fair chance, OP. Try it out a bit more before you judge, the unstable version has only been out a few hours now. ;)

    To be fair, the only content we got that is worth anything is liquid manipulation. Honest opinion time;

    - Quests are all on par with, or worse than starter MMO quests. Even the ones past the Floran Death Camp and Dreadwing.
    - Way too many cosmetic items added. Too much flavor ruins a dish.
    - Energy regeneration was a step in the right direction, but doing ANYTHING worthwhile that consumed energy shreds right through it.
    - Those moments of big blocks not loading for 10-50 seconds (yes, I timed it. ALMOST ONE MINUTE WAIT) still exist.
    - Planets are less varied now. Forests always have the same things, deserts always have the same things.
    - Constant need to switch nanosuits if you want to do other worlds. I hate to say it, but I miss the old warmth meter, as horribly unfair as it was.
    - Hunger is gone. The one survival aspect that required SOME effort to work with is gone.
    - Pixels are worthless now because you can easily get everything for free with minimal effort. Plus it's not used in crafting the armor anymore.
    - Every monster does the same two moves, with the exception of large monsters who have one extra move.
    - NPCs, such as cultists and Agaran, do way too much damage and take far too little. Unless you highly outgear the area, you will struggle. You WILL struggle.
    - Bosses are bosses now, but big problems still exist; Dreadwing takes no effort to beat, The robot is easily cheesed and you can't die to him unless you are intending to, and the Jelly boss isn't even a boss, but a glorified meat shield. It doesn't even fight back. I miss Bone Dragon and Fatal Circuit.
    - Progression is WAY too fast. I can reach the "end" in a fresh character in less than an hour without even rushing.
    - That stupid spoon quest is still a thing.

That's just the tip of the iceberg of complaints I've found, but I don't want to stretch the page too far.

The update LOOKED nice, but it's all flavor and no sustenance. I did get addicted to collecting all of the Liquid Erchius from every moon I land on though.

    EDIT:

Forgot to mention that the game's difficulty changed from a slow rise to one of the following; ridiculously easy or ridiculously difficult. There's no middle ground, and the difficulty is only there in crude locations with little maneuverability, such as Floran Hunting Grounds with monsters that can do that annoying gust. Plus, enemies go out of their way to get behind you, and if they do, you just gotta deal with it while taking a good sodomizing from an obnoxiously hard-hitting mace or something. I get that it's meant to be a challenge, but it's more like being annoying for the sake of being annoying now.

That's fine and all, but don't you see an issue with saying you're disappointed with something that you haven't even experienced?

It's like if someone gives you a piece of pie and you take a bite of the crust, accuse it of being dry, and refuse to try any part that has any filling.

I'm not going to comment on the post by @Campaigner because I haven't played the nightly in awhile and, well, Inquisition is keeping me from trying this. He might have very good points. And he's apparently actually played the game, visiting other planets, etc. (And god knows the game hasn't been perfect at any point before now).

I just don't understand how someone can go "Well, I haven't actually done anything to experience it, but I hate it."

  18. I believe there are, actually.

As for the time that you gave the game, I wouldn't say that you've played enough to review it properly.
However, I would say that you more than gave this game a fair shot. When it comes down to it, even half an hour is generous for a video game. If a game does nothing but disappoint you within the first 3 hours, then that's a serious problem, and I wouldn't blame you for refusing to play it anymore. (at least until it's the full release.)

I have managed to avoid the passives, although an aggressive hit the passive with a ranged attack and the passive all a sudden turned aggressive towards me?! That was an odd one and I never touched it. There are a few bugs that I have noticed, but mostly are optimization lag.

As for the 3+ hours I played... It took me 3 just to get to the portal place. Can't help that I get distracted mining certain things, like a big chunk of clay or several veins of ore. I actually made several pickaxes and used those to mine the clay. I am a builder and have not gotten to the building part. Granted I play on casual... So I have no worries on drops much. So far I have enjoyed the time I spent on it so far. I like what they did with the pickaxes, now that I know how they went about it first hand using them. I made gold and silver ones to see the difference. Only slight in duration of use.

The combat will getting use to as that definitely has changed a bit. I switch between flashlight sword to 2-handed weapon, then later to a nifty crossbow I found on a planet in the starter system. The use of the mm being prominent is something to also get use to, but at least I can make the cheap pickaxes when needed to do in bulk. I haven't gotten very far, as I am working on the ftl quest at the moment, among others. Love bug catching and was overzealous with the core fragments. (almost 200 mined. ><) I can say the same with the other ores, especially coal.

Coal was pretty abundant on the surface. I circled the world to arrive at spawn before I even started caving & digging. That took a while on both. So I can honestly say I at least am enjoying what there is so far, but then again I am easily entertain and glad I am.:)
