Digging down and getting out.

I move my mouse two blocks below my character, hug a direction and start digging. It creates a diagonal descent that you can easily climb up and down. You can do this dig usually without ever having to move the mouse, so it is a great way to dig a functional tunnel without paying attention. I made a screenshot to show what it looks like.

Straight down while holding right or left. Automatically creates a safe tunnel.

Some of us don't have that yet.

You should have access to wooden platforms, though, which while not as easy, is still pretty easy.

    What do you mean?

I was talking about the pulse jump or butterfly.

Indeed, you were. And I countered your reply stating that, while not as easy, wooden platforms are still fairly easy. Especially when you dig straight down, and then place them in one go from the bottom of the shaft as opposed to trying to place them one at a time while digging.

I dig straight down, no ledges no nothing, direct tunnel of death, but I never try and leave the way I came in, that's seams like a waste of time!

Once Im down to the level I want to be, I explore horizontally gradually moving down. When I finally hit lava, I work my way back up. Trying to use caves where possible to move up in.

Am I the only one that does not ascend the same path they descended?

I actually post an explanation and a picture of what Milan Mree said, at the top of this page.

I usually dig until i die or get tired of it (especially now that i have impervium armor , unless i'm on a level 10 planet i can't die.) Then i use the grapling hook. This results , about 50% of the time , in my death as i clip every single ledge on my way up and get whittled down from small falls until i die.

So yeah , death or grapling hook death.

If I don't have any decent techs, I just dig straight down and save and quit when I'm done. God, I'm such a filthy casual.

I always MEAN to go back up the tunnel I make, but more often than not I do what you do and end up digging my way to the surface.

I'll usually start with a straight-down tunnel near my spawn point; that'll be a vert shaft through the planet's first layer. Usually start running into caverns after that, so I'll tunnel cavern to cavern as I progress. Try to mine around cobblestone as much as I can. Once I get deep enough I pretty much just move between visible deposits, and continue down when I don't see anything worth mining. I'm not really in it to hit the bottom, so I kinda just go back and forth until I get sick of being trapped underground.

I'm fairly meticulous about platforms and torches, always make sure the path I've taken is well lit and easy enough to backtrack on. Can usually get to the surface via the way I came in within a minute or so. heh Unless I get sidetrack via some dark path I skipped on the way back.
