Digging down and getting out.

    When you dig down, how do you go about it? Do you just dig straight down or do you dig at an angle? Do you stay near the open veins (correct term?)?

    I am just curious, because I feel like I spent a lot of time digging in areas where there was not a lot of ore.

    I dig in a zig zag. Down enough to jump back up, mine a bit to the right. Down enough to jump back up, mine a bit to the left. Down enough to jump back up, mine a ittle bit to the right. Rinse and repeat.

    I either make a "hellivator" with ledges that I can jump on (I don't like making platforms")or a zigzag stairway. Stairway lets you cover a wider area so you would find more ore.

    I dig straight down, making sure my pickaxe is two blocks directly below me so I constantly dig nine blocks of area. Normally this causes a small resonance cascade (yes, that is the term for this, because magnets) which ends up destroying a row every so often, making it a fairly smooth decent.

    Digging at an angle to get down is for people that haven't perfected the manner of digging straight down.

    Usually I dig straight down, and when I reach the lowest reach I want to go to, I use wooden platforms. I place them by placing the first at the right distance to make it one jump high, then I jump up, keeping my mouse still, and place more in line until I reach the surface.

    Sometimes I do this in parts, which leads to platform overlap, but so it goes.

    Other times, when I'm not setting up a long term mine, I dig straight down, and then save-and-quit to get back to my ship. Hopefully they remove that someday, though, and also hopefully they add something better for getting up again.

    I branch slightly, but I keep my main mineshaft in the same location to make it easy to go up and down. And yes, ore veins are termed as such.

    You forgot the rest of that:

    4. Get buried in the sand.
    5. Freak out for a moment, remembering the sand mechanics in MineCraft and Terraria.
    6. Recover yourself after noticing that your character evidently does not suffer being buried.
    7. Decide between digging yourself out, or becoming a sand monster and await the next chance to frighten children with your horror.
    8. Rinse (because you're filthy by now, you silly sand monster) and repeat.

    ~~~
    That is how the game looks whenever I start digging. Exactly like that, with the 1998 graphics and overblown plot lines.
    Isn't it four question marks?
    Well, at any rate, don't expect too much return on your investment, as you're pretty much just playing with sand. And will be wiped, someday. Soon.
    .....Soon.
    The fastest way to do it is as said dig through sand and gravel, it's rather satisfying when everything just collapses and ores come out of everywhere. When finished, exit to main menu, start it up again and hey you're on your ship :p
    Hey!! That's kinda cheating, but I like it! I just need to find a bunch of coal (or get myself a nice mod to convert it to biofuel).
    Structured. Usually go down by 5 or 6 levels. Each point holding an 'outpost'. A 12x12 room for equipment, mineral stash, and room and board for resting and recovery. Other side of the room would be the next descent.
    Straight down, making sure my cursor is two blocks below my character to mine a 3x3 hole. I can use my Pulse Jump or Energy Dash tech to break the fall.
    I tend to dig from cave to cave when possible, actually trying to keep my digging into dirt or rock to a minimum. That's my plan at least. It doesn't seem to work out that way all the time in practice.
    I just find a close natural cavern, go to the deepest part of it, then start digging in zig-zag, exploring any connecting caverns.
    Go straight down, go through caves when I intersect with them.. straight down again. really easy to get back up since I just put on pulse jump or butterfly and fly back up.
  20. Reon
    Reon Phantasmal Quasar
    Straight down 3 wide shaft, then I place alternating blocks on the left and right walls of the shaft at max jumping height. That way, I can get back up and make side tunnels easily. To get down, I just tap left/right/left/right to jump down the mini-ledges.
