But why does everyone assume there won't be a difficulty setting? Still a long way till release, and I haven't read anything from the devs about them not implementing a difficulty setting. Also, by the time all the features are implemented and mobs parts finished (which they are not, but we know that is coming), how do we know that won't make things a lot harder?

I mean, it's like hearing about a movie, lets use Paranormal Activity as an example. You see the trailers and you're like "Oh shit, this movie looks like it's going to be scary! I have to see this!"

And then you watch it... Oh... it's just jump scares... There's no plot, nothing spooky, nothing that sticks to you. It's just a repeat of silence and then something loud. Being startled is not the same as being scared.

Adding a death penalty alone doesn't make the game any more engaging. It just makes it tedious when you happen to do something stupid and die.

Because he calls it "difficulty modes" which either means he doesn't understand what difficulty means, or he thinks that's what players were talking about.

pretty much, and you dont have to use it then again theres no incentive to unless youre a masochist. a real difficulty variety is in order or none at all. also if you bothered to actually go see those movies lol

Yeah, we get it. You are cool, you are posting geeky images and acting passively-aggressively to prove how you despise anyone with different opinion.

"Starbound now has 3 difficulty modes. Drop pixels on death, drop everything on death and lose your entire character on death! Also pvp"

Because they add a degree of difficulty. Just because it isn't the standard easy/medium/hard doesn't mean it isn't difficulty.

the game have simple mechanics and bad AI, to compensate, they made enemies do a lot of damage and have bad hurtboxes.
for some reason it got famous like portal did, and now all this people that jumped wagon think that's what difficulty is.

and now they loiter around every game, and defend all the mechanic flaws of the game saying it makes the game difficult.
indie devs are now catering to these people, and instead of making good AI and deep mechanics, just ups the damage of everything, and these people are loving it thinking they are playing good, challenging games.

you can identify one of these people when they say they like dark souls and hate F.E.A.R.

Difficulty modes aren't a standard thing, alot of good games have difficulty's tailored to the experience, lets use Fallout NV here. In addition to the standard "things hit harder" difficulty settings, it also has a hardcore setting, which had you watch your Thirst, Hunger and Fatigue. That change alone elevated it and made the game memorable to me. Death penalties do not.

Don't get me wrong, I like death penalties, it adds another layer to the game's immersion by having to choose my actions, However, it doesn't make the game harder in any other way than my own added caution.

Mobs still act in a predicable manner, and are easily wiped out if I have that tier's armor/weapons. The only difference now is I'll beam to ship earlier than normal, because slowly the monsters will grind my health down from the sheer amount of them if I don't spam bandages.

yeap, ill hate to be forced to lose ALL my pixels upon death (as if it doesnt already suck enough to lose a large percentage) and that is the lightest option? i hope they are seriously rethinking this.

That's what this thread is all about.
They don't really add difficulty. Monsters will stay as stupid and weak as they are now. You still stomp pretty much anything with the armor and weapons you can craft in no time.

The only thing this changes is that it makes insta-deaths (like when you get knocked off a mountain) way more annoying.

Granted, it adds some sort of difficulty, but it's not the real deal. It's not what people have asked for because it doesn't solve the problem people are having right now.

Not everyone wants to play an easy throw-away game. Hell, half of you are expecting "Farmville: in SPAAAAAACE"

Meanwhile, you're acting all high and mighty, because people disagree with that fact that you're just going around screaming at everyone over a mechanic which breaks the player economy. An economy which, I might add, was never there in the first place, and probably won't ever exist no matter how much anyone wants it.

In the default game, probably not, not enough uses for items to reduce inflation, with some good mods that actually utilize the excess of shit in the game, yes, there can be an economy.

It's certainly never going to happen on the scale the OP is thinking of, which is probably something on the scale of, say, TF2 at the bare minimum.

I can see the logic behind death penalties not being difficulty. I always disliked death penalties myself, because it doesn't really make a challenge. It's just kinda inconvenient.
I thought this thread was about difficulty 'de-valuating' the game experience.

Nah, I don't think it was tedious. I just had to be more prepared, and in my opinion the game was better because I used it.

So, about difficulty modes in SB. I don't really think a difficulty mode makes the game have any less value. If anything, it raises its value because more people(Both the "Casuals" and "Hardcores") will have fun playing it.
But I kinda want some actual difficulty modes instead of these "Death Penalties" we have now. At the very least increase the amount of damage done by monsters according to difficulty level.
