the servers are not fully implemented, they will have the option to use server-side saves, this means you have to make a new char that will fit the configurations the server host defines, this means that, if the host so desire, he can make you not only make a new char (this means no singleplayer/another server inventory) but also be set you in soft-mid-hardcore automatically, this means we will have softcore servers, mediuncore servers and hardcore servers, also MODs will be made downloadable inside the game when you join a server, so if the host so desire, he can also use mods to make the game easier/harder (seeing the community strides in modding at this early state, i think we will probably have "good hard" mods in no time.

you are judging the multiplayer in the game by it's incomplete state in beta while they already released all this information more than once in this very forum.

What we need is Spelunky approach without the roguelike aspect, where actually player's skill matters and you don't have to deal with artifical difficulty of just number crunching.

Yeah, it's not a difficulty mode, it's a penalty selector.

Mobs are still dumb, combat is still boring, etc.

I can relate to the OP, I kind of had a hyped up idea of a survival/space faring game. There is no survival element. You do a laps around a planet scooping up whatever ores you're interested in, see if there's a dungeon, hop back on your ship, fly somewhere else. The survival element is present only in the first 5-10 minutes of the game.

That evaporated, money talks, and casuals are bigger in number. Not many are interested in a challenge anymore, so I'll end up looking to mods for that stuff. My last true hope is server side mods/inventory.

I don't mind care bears too much on forums, but in my server, they aren't welcome.

Way to jump to conclusions, jerk. You have completely failed to understand what I was saying.

Complaining about a game implementing a feature that has ZERO affect on anyone who decides not to use said feature...quite possibly the most illogical thing I've ever heard. It's like complaining to a restaurant about an item they serve on their menu that you don't like and will never order, and never have to pay for or see on your plate. Absurd.

so having options are a great way to destroy potential?

can i make one last question?

    do you like dark souls?

What were you trying to say?
    Here's your post:
You're talking about "multiple difficulties" when there are none.

    Did I miss something?

I deleted the post, because I read your post fast and got the idea, that you will be forced to have only server side saves. Then I read it again and saw that it actually will be only an option.
Dark Souls? Well, I thought of getting it on Steam sale, but I am not sure of playing it without a controller. Is it good?

I don't agree with your delivery of the overall message, but I agree with the message. My reaction after reading forums and the general intelligence level of the responses was a defeated sigh, and now I spend most of my time on the mods sections. I can only hope they expand on the modding functionality so greater things can be achieved via modding, and just ignore the by-the-numbers approach the developers are taking.

This has probably already been said, but multiple difficulty settings was always on the agenda for this game. And adding them in does not turn this game into Terraria. Multiple Difficulty settings is not something Terraria introduced, it's something which has been around for almost as long as video games themselves. Genuine criticism is Good, it's what the Devs want, but the OP can be summed up in two words: Boo and Hoo, nothing helpful there. Honestly man, you just sounded like a little baby the way you posted.

Wait, what? Giving server more control, more options, and ability to make various server types/rules for every kind of multiplayer preference is destroying multiplayer potential? That's almost more ridiculous then hating a feature you can easily never use and pretend doesn't exist if you so choose. Amazing. Ooo, hey look, perfect time for another restaurant analogy (I must be hungry). That's about the same as a restaurant only server one item and appealing to ONLY the people that want that ONE item. I'd rather go eat at a place that gives me options based on whatever mood I'm in.

Best idea ever = ability for a single game to create as many multiplayer modes/experiences as possible. That's why Battlefield and Call of Duty (every shooter) has multiple server gameplay modes.

When you have to mod the game this hard to actually enjoy it.. bro, I don't think it is worthy and the level of enjoyment won't be that good anyway. I won't go through it and just move on. But I wish you the best.

it does not matter if your last reply was a misread.

it's the game that killed difficulty the same way starcraft killed strategy games.

I would love it if we got difficulty settings, we didn't though.

Added difficulty is more of a "Well, I guess if you squint and twist your head." side effect. Adding tedium is not difficulty, it's just "When you die, would you like us to kick your balls, or take a sledge to them?". Difficulty would be multipliers, advanced behavior, different abilities, harder bosses that break blocks, random starting planets that actually don't have a restriction (I.E Oh damn, I started on a magma planet).

This is just... meh... "Oh no, I might lose something upon dying, good thing I don't die because everything is terribly easy and predictable!"
