Did I just break the main quest?? :(

So, I was at my first planet. I crafted the distress beacon. A spaceship and warmongering spacepenguins arrived. I thought it meant I had to craft another beacon, but my next beacon doesn't summon anything.
I didn't attack the penguins, but I just escaped.
Now, even if I can move to other planets, there's no actual quests popping up. Did i just screw it up by not killing the first boss? Do I have to restart?

 

You don't haveto restart, just craft another beacon and kill the UFO boss. At the moment there are no further quests after this one. You're doing fine.

 

Gear up and go attack the boss. You've not messed up nor do you need to restart.

 

I kept reading beacon as bacon. I thought to myself "What bacon are they talking about? There was bacon involved in the first few quests?"

Try closing Starbound and then craft another beacon. If that does not work, then you might just have to restart.

You're not that far in the game, I assume. So it should be okay. Unless you have ignored the first quests and went planet hopping in search for bacon.

 

As the others said, just craft another beacon.

I advise placing it close to where you spawn on the planet, in case you either don't have the armor needed to withstand their attacks, or don't cheese the boss fight. It's possible to make it back to the planet after respawning, and keeping up the fight before they disappear if you die

 

Very well, I'm crafting another beacon and seeing if this time it summons the penguin UFO.

One question: why is it that to find the distress beacon blueprint I have to write "distress beacon" on the crafting search menu, otherwise it's not in the crafting list?

 

Because you're not looking hard enough. Trust me, it's there, it's just really easy to overlook.

 

What, you don't remember the quest to cook some meat at the beginning of the game?

 

I remember the quest objective was to obtain Cooked Alien Meat. Is it wrong to remember things differently? Lecic, your question is straight up douchebag.

I did the same thing during my first play through. I made like 3 beacons hoping a "nice" ship would pick me up. lol.
