But I mean that one of the pronunciations that synonymous with old English is actually wrong, and it sounds quite a bit more similar the English as we know it. Obviously it's still very much different, but one of it's most famous hallmarks is incorrect.

 

Modern English is several generations away from Old English which is quite similar to German and has way way more complicated grammar than Modern English. The pronunciation from the Old times is also mostly gone due to the Great Vowel Shift from the 15-16th century.

Indeed, I'm not disputing this. Old English is still very much different to what we know these days. It's just that one of its supposed "features" is actually untrue, which I think changes how it's viewed, in a small way. Or at least it does for me.

 

I actually had Classes on Old English as part of the History of Language course It's nasty Still better than Protoindoeuropean, but nasty nonetheless
