    i support this idea
I was acctualy really surprised it doesnt work this way.
In current state, you will always resort to use two handed swords/hammers etc.. or ranged weapons.
since they have wide angle of attack.
Result is going to be, that noone will use one handed melee weapons

So you are just going to ignore everything else that has been said and just focus only on that single comment... Ok how about I make it easy for you?

WEAPONS HIT BOX DIFFERENT. MAKES BALANCE. DIRECTIONAL WEAPONS IMBALANCED. EVERYBODY USE SPEARS AND NOTHING ELSE. NO REAL CHOICE. BORING.

There, did that help you out?

That seems to be true for my friends, as well. I'll also mention, as partial inspiration from your post, that our weapons (except guns)... can't actually aim downwards. At all. Given the nicely varied terrain, one singular and stiffly constrained attack pattern per weapon is... problematic in combat.

Proper articulation of a viewpoint, including critical analysis and a reasonable rebuttal of points, goes a lot farther than capitalization, underlining, or bold font changes. Or, as you prove, all of the above. Regarding the point you made: Yes, directional aiming makes things better in many cases.... which is precisely why guns are currently a bit broken in-game, as they do comparable damage to swords, but have infinitely more range, 360 degrees of attack effectivity and for most the energy drain is negligible. However, allowing other weapons to be aimed would easily compensate for this. Your comment about the spear is understandable, but I can easily illustrate a few examples to balance it. A spear, typically, has good range. However, guns would have better range.... so perhaps a spear could pierce through multiple opponents instead, or deal more damage. If this was considered problematic, they could just typically have a longer attack animation, thus limiting dps. Problem solved.

Well at the risk of getting my head bombed in for mentioning the 'T' word... here I go...

Does everyone in Terraria use a spear because its high damage and directional? NO, they most certainly did not. Last time I checked actually, it wasn't the god all mighty weapon that you think will be created in Starbound, what it IS, is a fluid weapon thats satisfying to use.

Don't worry, I have no intention of chastising you for mentioning another game, be it Terraria, Minecraft, Infiniminer, Dwarf Fortress, Dungon Keeper, Populas... Heck how far back can we go with this chain of evolving rip offs? Anyway the point is people who don't like to compare games have some sort of mental defect.

Now lets run over this very slowly for you, to help you understand. Step by step, ok? Nice and easy. Tell me, what was the most popular weapon in Terraria?

If people wanted to be treated like an adult then they would act like it and actually read. Apparently you didn't, so enjoy I guess...

GUNS CURRENTLY OP. MEANT TO USE ENERGY. THEY DON'T. WILL BE FIXED. SERIOUS NERF COMING. DON'T MAKE MELEE BETTER FOR THEM BECAUSE THEY WILL BE WORSE LATER ON. YOUR EXAMPLE IS BAD AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD.

I have already said this you know. It was right there for you to read, but you didn't, so here we are.

That is a list of the top ten, not weapons that are often used. In the late game when you have access to all of those weapons and can choose your preferred one, you will find a lot less diversity. Try again please, this time try to reference post 1.2 content, your source is out dated.

While I am aware that this is the internets, disrespecting and talking trash is commonplace, there's no reason to be doing it here, if you don't consider people here to match your intellect, perhaps you need to stop posting here.
Also, let me introduce you to the concept of editing you post, rather than making a double-post. Merged it for you though, you're welcome.

    Thank you for the merge.
I have every intention of showing people respect and treating others as equals. If I start totally ignoring a given point I will be sure to expect the same from others.

    huh :speechless:
I am sorry if i offended you in some way. And i apologize.
I just wanted to say, that i agree with OP.
Yes there are balancing issues. Trust me, i like hard games. But in my opinion, difficulty should not be made by limiting character controls.
And again i saw that original poster had few good ideas to balance it out.
Simply put i agree with him. It is just matter of opinion. Sorry ;)

why would a top 10 list be of weapons people dont of
Yeah, thats a really good point, shields would really benefit from being able to be aimed and then you would be required to actually point your shield at the enemy, not just have your mouse pointing left or right and be immune to all damage

I do truly believe this feature needs to be added at some point in the future. If it is not, I foresee most dedicated melee weapon users using 2 handed weapons because the arc is so valuable and easy to work around unlike ( my usual favorite weapon :( ) spears.

I'll be quite honest here, when I first entered the world of Starbound I began looking for the nearest different melee weapons simply because I wanted to get a feel for how unique they all were. I luckily found a spear within my first few hours of hunting, however it became an extremely awkward experience when I could not aim the weapon the way I wanted to. I was simply perplexed at the matter. Unfortunately nearby there was a bird-like creature who stared at me for a bit and then proceeded to completely demolish me as I lay there helpless because I could not position myself in time to perfectly land a strike that fit in the weapon's arc. Later on I came to realize that it was not only spears that suffered from this uncanny design, rather it also happened with most of the one handed weapons and of course, daggers. As a person who would prefer to play an at least a pure-melee archetype character, discovering this design feature was quite disheartening. If things stay the way they are then I will be forced to end up using only the best 2 handed style weapons simply because they are the most versatile melee weapons to use, which would make the experience a lot less enjoyable for me.

melee just has too many things going against it compared to guns, it annoys anyone who just wants to run around the universe with their trusty blades/spears/whatever after long enough

Why, yes, I agree completely with the OP.
I sincerely don't think it is (even while I do get the issue there) a matter of comparison with guns, and how weak melee is compared to guns, strategically. I simply think that limiting the player to a single, defined attack range completely restricts combat techniques to moving around to hit, dodging enemies' attacks and rushes.

Even if the whole angle idea proves to be too much of a change, I believe having a few different attacks, based on stances, just like a fighting game could cover some of our problems, with high attacks reaching higher enemies, low blows dealing with the ones slightly under us, and such.

Directional defense would be extremely well-placed too, just to say, and that would be a lot more welcome if the melee system did become more open as suggested.

I really think we need this. Weapons are balanced in their own ways already with swing speed, knock back, and damage varieties. as far as spears go, they would be much more fun if they could be aimed more than two directions because they already loose swing speed and have a smaller hit box. And shields would be WAY more fun if they could be aimed as well.

I too would like to be able to stab and strike at an angle, it would definitely make melee combat feel less stiff. Having shields behave in a similar way would be nice as well,

Spears are long, sure but they could be balanced with lower attack speeds and hopefully the inability to to hit enemies through walls if they need to. defending yourself from enemies above and below you is incredibly difficult at this point not to mention ranged enemies above you.

I completely agree with this idea, there's often a time where I have to deal with the pains of not being able to hit a flying enemy above me.
This would greatly help the combat experience within the game

So I don't understand why people are scared of directional attacks breaking balance and making combat too easy.

I mean, think of games like Zelda II and Super Castlevania. Those games have directional weapon aiming, and are they easy? I don't think so. It doesn't make you overpowered. It just gives you more control over your weapon and allows for a genuine, fair challenge as opposed to an arbitrarily restricted fight.
