Devs, can we keep our save games in 'the cloud' please?

Me, like many others I assume, play from different machines and would LOVE to have the option to have our save games in the cloud somewhere.

    What think?

Wouldn't Chuckle need to have a cloud storage server for that?

(I would assume its not on the table until after release. Since there might still be rare wipes and removing a save from the cloud tends to be hard to do in most games).

It can be part of steam integration, they don't need their own servers for it.

Exactly. Hope they keep this in mind.

Doubt it's going to be in before full release

That wouldn't really be needed, since it is quite easy to just move your character files into another folder before a new update comes out, or when there's going to be a character wipe

The cloud might get hacked, then those hackers post our saves everywhere for the world to see.
    "The Potatoening".

Would you want that to happen?

Potatoes aside, SB sure will be able to use cloud saving at some point, when it's closed to being finished.

What he's asking for doesn't have anything to do with updates or character wipes. He wants to be able to play on his own computer, then go over to his friends house and log on to steam and play his character there. Or play on desktop then go in to the living room and play the same character on his laptop without having to manually backup/move files himself.

I hope the full release has this feature. I have had no problems with backupping my files online, though!

Currently Starbound is DRM free - it only uses steam to update the game, not to launch.

The second you integrate with steam - you can no longer run starbound without steam.

I'll take being able to play Starbound without Steam over Steam integration, thanks. It's a bit more of a hassle but if I'm stuck without internet for some reason then it leaves me the rather rare option of having a newer PC game to play that isn't tied to an online service.

I've never made a game for steam, but as a developer I know you can do anything. If they wanted all of the fancy Steam bells and whistles and still wanted you to be able to launch the game, then there's a way to do it. It may come at the cost of simply having all the fancy integration stuff turned off if you launch it manually, but anything is possible.

You can still play Steam games without an internet connection... most of them at least

same here, was playin starbound on my laptop while i was on holidays.
back home i had to copy the char folder to my pc which is a little annoying cuz i had to upgrade my map again since the map has been resetted to alpha only and had to repeat the tutorial quests too.

Well, that would require alot of manually up/downloading and copying/pasting.

But let see the already mentioned bright side: You don't have to have Steam open all the time to play Starbound.

    Just use symbolic links.

You don't need to move or copy folders this way. Also, these apps don't download or upload everything, only the parts of files that have been modified precisely for a quick and efficient service.

That's how I keep ALL my games synchronized! :slowpoke:
