I didn't even think of that solution for a closed beta.
It sounds like a pretty good system. Of course some actual good testers will be left out as well, but it will certainly weed out anyone that's not serious about the game.
I bought the soundtrack to show that I support his game, but I wouldn't mind seeing a closed beta 'key' appear on the site in a similar fashion.
When he should release this opportunity though, I'm not sure. Honestly any moment would be fine for me, the game is finished enough for the beta-testing to be fruitful even if it's only singleplayer.

I'm still against a release without multiplayer despite the fact that I doubt I'll ever make use of the function, simply because I want the launch to be as successful as possible.

I suppose I'm just wondering how the closed beta will be handled, and how CA will pick people for it. If done via pre-orders on the site, then that would be alright.

I agree that CA has spent too long to rush into release and possibly ruin the game. I'll wait.
What CA should do, is have CF do another stream of the completed game just before release. I mean the day before. I never heard of the game prior to the first stream, and then I wanted it...now. This would get more consumers to buy the game. I hope it's done soon, but if it's going to be 2016 for a good game, then I can wait.

Well our hopes got up cus of recent posts, now they r brought down unfortunately, of course the game is worth the w8, but that doesnt make u want to play it now less, i really hoped to play it on long cold evenings, last hope is beta for preorders, i think CA is perfecionist so the beta will be kinda like finished game, only with minor bugs maybe.

I am disappointed that the game will be coming out early next year and yet, I'm not.

I can understand the business decision side of it and with November releasing so many huge games right now(Like Fallout 4)--had he released it now, his game would have drowned in the flood of huge releases.

I think by having the full release next year in the first quarter, this game can stand on its two legs and get the proper coverage it deserves.

I have been watching this game since 2 years like everyone else and this is my firts post in the forums. I'm not dissapointed in any sense because like CA, I never had a day set in my mind for this game to be released. Most of the games I been playing and mostly big names have been dissapointing me too much because release dates and unfinished products. This way he is handling things makes me happy because I see he is actually finishing the game with all he promised and not making some half baked cake, right now I see that cake base is done but is yet not finished so the hard part is done. I would really love some clear info about how the beta will be handled and how he will pick the testers, I'm ok with people who doesnt know about the game too because they cant bring some comments that they can appeal a bigger playerbase (except not changing too much from the base of the game which is Harvest moon).

I don't really see how multiplayer will work in the game. I hope it isn't so different from singleplayer.

Has it really been three years? I can't wait for the game either, but if we've already waited three years we can wait a little longer.

I'm running out of games to play!

But seriously, I'm not the one making a game all by myself, so I'll sit tight and wait. Honestly, after I saw the Chucklefish guys and girls playing the game it seems that a bit of polishing is needed.

Who else called the multiplayer being the stumbling block? Hollow's right about waiting til it's done, though. Hopefully he does go with the closed beta for us forum-goers.

I think most people who played harvest moon didn't played them because of the multiplayer (Sure it had but it was almost not really relevant). He is saying he has the hole deal done so people is really happy to heard that and want to play after all this years. On the other hand he would be lying about having MP feature on release which is why Early acces would work with this project because we get the game but a base feature is still being developed which it will take not much time to be done, but other early access has been done so bad like taking years of developing and still not finished and then they can call quits when they want and take the money and run away. I wouldnt mind neither play the beta as a Pre-order option since I'm sure he has quiet a few fans following this game. But yeah IMO multiplayer can be fun but with this kind of games I rather play them solo for many hours and experience them to it fullest.

This really isn't the type of game that works with multiplayer, but Hollow's right. Youtubers will whine and moan if they don't get multiplayer (which only a few of them will even use), so CA is better off implementing it. Still, open beta for single player would be enough for now.

I doubt the type of youtubers you're thinking about would even play something like Stardew Valley to begin with, nor would their audience probably. Most youtubers play alone anyway.

It's so irritating to see all the people like, "oh, not coming out this year? Goodbye, thanks for nothing" in the comments sections. I understand the right to be disappointed, sure, but why do you have to whine about it? Take a second to think. ConcernedApe is an indie developer, and a relative beginner when compared to what we all know Stardew is based off of - Bokujo monogatari, or Harvest Moon's developer Marvelous Interactive. Or take your pick of any game developing company in the entire industry. They have a whole team of people working on their games, and probably a PR team working out marketing, release details, press releases, etc etc. CA has himself, and Chucklefish as backup. Of course CA is going to make mistakes when it comes to release dates and the like. Marvelous Interactive's American publisher, Natsume, nearly set a record for pushing back Harvest Moon release dates I might add. It's totally normal in this industry.

It's okay to be frustrated - you may have been waiting for Stardew Valley for years, and feel betrayed. But think about everything CA gave us, by opening himself and the game up to the public and allowing us to follow along in development. Yes, you'll get your hopes up more than usual. But the trade off is that CA has let us have unprecedented access to development. He's listened, personally responded to, and even implemented our feedback. He's LISTENING to us. We're going to get a game that WE, the public want. Not what some big company thinks they'll net the most profit off of. CA is barely even accepting donations!

Yeah, you're going to have to wait. Longer. Overall, from the beginning of development, a long time. But in the end, you're going to get a game that's been developed by someone who considers this game his baby, and crafted it just for us. That's a trade off I'll take any day. Thanks, Ape!

There's nothing wrong with people expressing their opinions, you may not agree with them but complaining about other people complaining is just silly. You also can't blame some for being disappointed, many here have been following the game for 2-3 years and have gone through multiple moments when they got their hopes up, with new trailers that had "coming soon" at the end or overly optimistic dev updates. As far as i can see everyone who's disappointed by the delay is also saying that in the end, after waiting this long, a bit more won't matter and it's better if the game ends up being more polished :)

All smart devs "involve" their audience in the production process because, in the end, they're making the game for the customer not for themselves, it's his baby but he's trying to convince the customer to buy it. You make it sound like it's something we should be grateful for when it's not really the case, he's getting as much out of it as we are if you think about it, he's fostering a solid consumer base that will both buy the game as soon as he decides to release it and very likely spread word about it aka free publicity :)

Talk about childish behaviour. Not only its hard to understand but also insulting. There was never a release date set in mind so I don't get why so angry plus we always had updates that showed how much was done and how the game was developing. The fact that there was a stream means is already close and it never got left behind even if we didnt donate or paid anything. I just hope he will keep the game lively with updates after release.
