Just remove space vampires and you have a good idea It'as hardly derelict if theres something on it. As for the hard enemies, automatic defenses seem like the most likely way to do this
Definitely like to see this in some form, especially if it can be made as creepy as the crashed ship in Super Metroid. Maybe even complete with crazy fire-spewing giant ghost boss (Phantoon, I think it was called). I don't know how well making it creepy/scary would work though, what with the players being bold adventuring types full of weapons and stims.
Sounds neat. It would also be fun if they collided with a planet, spreading whatever was on it and forcing you to go past caves to get in.
How about when you're near to end game (end game being a term meaning getting the best everything because there won't actually be an end) you're able to make an item, or, maybe on a derelict space station that's so hard only near to end game players can get through it, you rescue a dying NPC who used to be the station's tech-head (and the guy would be very skilled, professional, prestigious etc so that only this particular station could afford to hire him and because of this he would have really great equipment) so you'd find him he would be next to the AI system and he would tell you that this one is corrupt and to terminate it, and then he gives you an item that is like the ultimate in 'system detection' technology (a term i just made up, don't criticize) meaning it can find out pretty much EVERYTHING about a system, so it can do some other stuff, feel free to expand, as well as being able to find out if an AI is corrupt or not.
I think that some of the abandonned spaceships should have screwed up artificial gravity, broken walls that let the air out, hazard rooms (engines, reactor, lava, ice, etc.) and maybe require smart planning to get through safely, like crawling through air-vents past hazard-rooms. It would also be cool if they had broken warp rooms that led you to really dangerous planets and stuff.
