Defense for the possibility of large meteor hit.

So, Ive finally built up a respectable amount of resources and I'm learning a lil something about the wiring system. However, I've still yet to find an appropriate planet to build on, much less how to defend against a meteor hit.

So, the thinking behind this is.. I wanted to have my own base built inside of a asteroid belt. Its a fun idea, and requires a serious amount of effort on my part to use whats available and build a cool looking base with some pretty unique features.

However, without an oxygen system - how do I manage to build it and not have it tick the living crap out of people who do not have oxygen tanks or space helmets? Would a makeshift airlock help? Would I need to build it with a thousand heater units? These are all things I'm wondering what I might need to do.

The second idea, is to have a regular planet that is pleasant to be on, like a forest planet where I can grow all the prettier trees that I saw on my quest toward endgame. I could build a wooden or glitch style abode on the top side, then add a secret base underground, connected by a skyrail system. That way if the meteor hits it could only impact the surface and it would only destroy a part of a skyrail system and just the wooden house. I'd rather it destroy a small construction than a huge one like I plan on doing for the asteroids or the underground base.

Based upon what meteor hits I've seen in youtube and in game, I figure if it hits something else FIRST - then the likely hood of it impacting on something more important is lessened.

Have any other builders found a way around this? What are your ideas?

There is a mod that reflects meteors if thats a valid solution.

i read somewhere that meteors spawn right out of your field of vision which apparently lets them spawn underground
i did not test to see if it is true

  4. There are no air generators in the game so naturally everyone should be equipped with their own survival system, heaters do not provide oxygen, only heat.
The meteor prevention shields or whatever will be added in later I assume, that's what I've read a looooonnnng time ago.

Meteors are still keen on spawning inside the gates if you make them too high above, and the meteors will still hit you if the force nodes are too close to the building (at least 3 blocks away from your structure, otherwise the acceleration of the incoming meteor wont be thwarted in time. And it's best to use two layers of force nodes).

Guys I'm getting nervous. I've been building on my new home planet for quite a number of hours now and still haven't seen any weather patterns at all (which might indicate a meteor is coming). WHAT DO??

Is anyone using an anti-meteor mod they'd recommend?

If you've been on a planet for hours and haven't seen meteors yet I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm not sure what other people have seen or if anyone has dug into the scripting but I've never been on a planet for hours and been surprised by a meteor storm. The ones I've seen have occurred in the first 20 minutes of being on the planet. When meteors do come I've never noticed anything peculiar before their arrival. One meteor shower occurred while I was shopping in a newly discovered Avian city on a perfectly clear sunny day before flying rock turned them into tenderized poultry fillets. If at all possible, immediately beam to your ship to limit the damage. The meteors can't fall while you are off-world, however if you beam right back down the storm may continue so be ready to beam right back up. (If you think about it, your character is a harbinger of doom; monster attacks, meteor strikes, poison rain... NONE of this happens to the NPC inhabitants of worlds until YOU arrive lol.)

My strategy for testing a world for meteors before building a base would be to make a tiny house or enclosed cave, place a bed, go to sleep, and afk for an hour or so (you won't need to eat while sleeping). When you come back, check for any craters or meteor rock.

As far as other nasty weather patterns like poison rain, no idea.

    * Disclaimer: I take no responsibility in the event of total base devastation. Perma-death players should presume permanent character death for following my advice.

That's not bad advice, actually. Setting up some small basins would allow water to collect if the planet has rain showers. I dunno if snow or acid rain accumulates...
    Thanks

Hmm, I wonder how meteors interact with water. Do they pass through the water and impact the bottom? Does the water just absorb / nullify them? Would be interesting to play with, but even if there were some way to use it as protection you'd probably still lose water over time due to the edges of the pool getting hit. If nothing else it would be hilarious to try to protect yourself under a pool of liquid only to realize that your meteor disaster is now compounded by a flood of water / poison / lava.

Another protection angle to research would be to determine how the game decides where meteors can spawn. I wonder if filling in a large amount of background tile around your base would cause the game logic to believe that your base was not surrounded by open sky and therefore not spawn meteors near it during a meteor event. Not sure there is a aesthetically pleasing way to accomplish that but it would be something to play with.

Well as a guy who has tried to study every aspect of meteors thanks to my base planets being ravaged by them, here is what I've learned.

As of furious Koala every planet has roughly a 20% chance of having either Large Meteors, small meteor barrages, or both as it's own randomly generated weather. There is currently no possible way to determine if your planet has meteors in it's weather system, except for trial and error (And by that I mean building your house and hoping it doesn't get crushed)

Here are the meteor spawning methods:
    1) They spawn directly above your screen, NOT above the planet
    2) They spawn ANYWHERE where there is exposed sky (Even below ground, assuming you have taken out the background blocks)
    3) If you are building underground, and the sky is exposed, a meteor WILL spawn inside of your base, given those two criteria are met.

Small meteors cannot destroy blocks such as Blast stone, Obsidian, or Dire stone by themselves, but since small meteors are often in large numbers this doesn't matter too much you're screwed either way. As far as large meteors go... Well let's just say an object that takes up half your screen, couple with the fact they are programmed to spawn directly over your head and you have no warning at all... Well you see my point.

Hmm, suppose you put enough background tile around your base such that no matter where you stand in your base the background tile stretches a fair ways above the screen. Perhaps that would prevent your base from being hit (provided you weren't sky-diving above your base and let a meteor follow you home) You could use those leaf blocks and pretend you live inside a huge shrub lol.

Looks like I will go for the mod. I was hoping to find some sort of material to help me block them or have something like a Biodome defense shield, and I still have to look forward to a couple more beta stages of stuff that may get added in the future.

I found pressurized steel on a planet and was hoping that might do the trick. Sadly, I guess we are not there yet.

I have another question now. Seeing as we are on the far side of logic when it comes to sci-fi, has anyone grown trees in space yet? I might give that a shot.

Trees will grow in asteroid fields, but I've never modded my ship to have the roon for them there.

Bye bye base! Almost finished and poof! Meteor wasn't even my problem. *sigh* I lost everything but 1 chest that was full of thrown weapons. Ahhh, beta stages. :)
