Hey =P i just picked up starbound and i love it. however, one of my biggest issues is the crazy amount of time it takes to mine blocks once you go down two or three levels. since mining is such a central aspect of the game, i feel like it should be more fun then tedious, and i often dread having to go back into the mine when i don't already know of a good cave system. thank you!
I'm new to the game myself, but I've noticed that each level of pickaxe mines faster than the previous, and I suspect we'll be able to eventually build a sci-fi equivalent to a bull dozer which will blow rocks away like dust in the wind. While early mining is a bit of a snooze fest, progression is fun, and without the snoozefest to contrast to, things like the bulldozer won't really provide a sense of "wow this is fast".
im not saying that we need a giant increase in mining, just a little bit less of a penalty for mining deep. once you get to the lower levels with even a silver pick you can hardly get anywhere. also, the end game is hard to get to when we keep on getting our saves wiped
I hope you're being facetious with the save wipe complaint, you knew what you were getting into with the early beta stuff
I completely agree, that when you are really deep there is just too much obsidian. Way too much. It takes way too long to get through it, even with a gold pickaxe. It's very tedious and getting to the lava after the obsidian is quite anticlimactic.
As a test, I actually modded the miningtool file to increase the radius to 4 blocks and increased tile damage to make it go a bit faster. I have way more fun mining now because it is more of a spirited jaunt through the underground portion of a planet as opposed to a slow and tedious slog. The planets are big enough that even with a 6 block mining radius and 10+ tile damage on your pick, it would take you hours to fully explore a single planet.
To be fair, I think the idea of obsidian is "unless you really want to see lava, or have to strip this planet of everything it has, you should turn around". Are there any actual benefits to getting under it?
Yeah I can see that. I just wish there was something below it that was worth it, and not just a bag of over 500 obsidian. The fact that the logic of the game is "the deeper you go, the more rewards there will be," just didn't fall true in this situation.
