So Tiy posted an animation of a person being cloned. He implied that upon death, you die and are cloned. Is this optional? And how does the clone get your gear back? And I am not against cloning, just curious. Here is the animation if you haven't seen.[IMG]

(sorry too late to care about linking via fewer words).

To answer your question, I'd hope that it does cost a certain amount of some currency, weather pixels or materials to be able to clone.
As for getting gear back, i'd hope, again that you have to go get ya gear back.

No "oh, you died?, here's ya gear!, don't worry!" - I'd hate that holding hands sort of crap.

EDIT : apologies if the first sentance came across as some a-hole, i only ment, that there is a thread with similar ideas.

What would happen if you died and didn't have enough pixels/materials?

You left out my edit, if only for context. :p
If i died because i forgot to refill or reset my clone-facility, that's my bad.
Can't live forever, has to be some form of threat, even if it's the fact of "player-forgetfulness".
That's 'my own' ideal though, I can see where that would fail.
You could have the NPC's who work for you keep your cloning lab upto date, fully fueled etc.

But the OP brings up a good ideal, as far as cloning goes.

:giggle: If you ran out of materials you'd probably be missing a few limbs when you get cloned.

    on a serious note though

I haven't heard much info on the respawn system, but if it did use pixels or materials it could work like Boarderlands where it takes a certain amount, and when you run out it just leaves you dirt poor.

It would be interesting to see if they take a more harsher penalty though.

I think this is moreover a death penalty in all thread and not just about the 'cloning' aspect. That really has nothing to do with the penalty IMO and it should be based on what they think will be best suited for gameplay.

If it rolls off of options id bet they have several choices, like Terraria does.

I believe there would be some merit to this game adopting a "roguelike" approach to player death. Especially if there is some form of player level / earned skills. Is there going to be such a thing? Anyway, the clones would start back in your ship, with full access to your facilities, but with its gear (and levels) gone. The possibility would still be there for you to go get your gear back. It would effectively be a new character, though your progress wouldn't be entirely lost. Dying without the facilities or currency required to clone would force you to start an entirely new character, but your former ship and facilities would still exist on the planet where you died.

But anyway, it would probably be easier to just have you respawn without any fuss, it's a sandbox game so there isn't an absolute need for a death penalty.

But there is! Otherwise you would just try to ninja-loot tier10 planet with tier2 equipment

And here I was thinking death penalty as in Capitol Punishment.

It took me far longer than it should to realize this thread was not that kind of death penalty.

no its not optional cloning is the respawn plain and simple no ifs ands or buts about it not sure how gear works so far though its only a serious problem with hardcore rpers to which tiy responded just dont die if you dont wanna be cloned also supposedly he wants an acheivement for never dying so some people can try to achieve the impossible

It could use a system akin to Face of Mankind, if anyone knows that game. You respawn with your stuff but if you don't have a clone available for use upon death, you die. Period.

Honestly it wasn't much of a threat, just meant you had to remember to check and buy some more every so often. Still it'd add a bit more, I dunno, realism?

How about you die, are cloned, and then have to go back to where you died to get your stuff from your corpse, which also happens to be a timed inventory space, after which your items just drop normally.

    Simple, yet effective.

Sorry i hate that run back where you died stuff since dark souls :p

  17. No money?

You'd be cloned by a potato and not that high-tech cloning device of yours.

Resulting in numbness. -X% move/attack speed, -X% total damage to melee weapons, -X% accuracy, etc

Whow whow whow, wait a second. What about robotic characters? You cant clone machines, This clone stuff doesn't fit in with inorganics.
The above is rhetorical for mild laughter, do not explain the obvious "duhhh you rebuild the robot and replace its memory card with the other one when you find it".

Why not use a system similar to that one episode of Dr. Who, Where the clones were made off of the original host, who sits in a sooper dooper chair of consciousness transmission, controling the silly putty clone and preforming dangerous tasks until one proves fatal and severs the mind connection between clone and host. Costing the Original a bit of money but not their life.

It would work like the above, with widely purchased 1ups so to speak. When you run out of lives, you gotta use your main character and VERY VERY VERY CAREFULLY scrounge up some cash for another clone to be safe again, otherwise you die and its game over.
This method would please the hardcore RPers as their original character would never actually "die", and would not have so many loopholes and problems relating too "the DNA is a copy of a copy of a copy, so its degraded and not as fresh as the original"

Hope that made sense, its rather late for me and I got a cold the other day that still hasn't killed over in my inhospitable innards.

EDIT: sorry for all the alliteration, ive been playing a bit... Quite a bit of baulder's gate...
