Either way, ore dropping, or deletion, is a mechanic that the majority of players do not want. The general reactions to this change have been overwhelmingly negative ones. And it would be pointless to include it, since likely the majority of players would simply mod it out.

... and I was then promptly reminded of lava and rescinded that. Follow the discussion, please.

Now, if the ores are marked as immune to lava, then it might be okay. But "okay" is not "optimal".

I personally still don't think it's okay. There are too many variables involved in ores being impossible to retrieve if you die in a bad spot. 'bottom of the map' being one of them. even if the ores are not destroyed, planets have a 'kill zone' where if you move into it, even at full health, you're instantly killed. this INCLUDES asteroid fields. and unfortunately, asteroid fields have no lava to warn you that you are nearing the bottom of the map. You just will suddenly die without warning. ore lost there will be lost forever since it will drop into an instant kill zone. I typically carry around tons of diamonds for drill repairs, losing a stack of 1000 diamonds permanently because it falls off the map or something is completely unacceptable.

I think egoraptor said it best when it comes to this sort of thing.

In the meantime I believe I've successfully removed ore drops from Normal Mode, using that mod posted earlier as a guide.

It'll still say "ORES DROPPED" on the gameover screen, but they don't actually drop.

Let me know if it doesn't work.

80% of the problem lies within THE VERY FIRST PLANET, IE, the one you CAN'T leave until you fix your ship.

Once you get your ship able to move, you probably have Iron Armor by then, and getting the rest of the stuff is not that hard, because you can usually get a gold pickaxe by then, and have enough stuff to make Steel Armor and Steel weapons all on the very first planet. Once you get past that initial brickwall that is "I start with no equipment and a broken sword" phase, then the ore dropping thing is not that bad of an issue.

Dunno about anybody else here, but 80% of all of my deaths in Starbound were during T1 play, before the first boss.

The Ore Drop thing hurts newbies more than it hurts established characters. Should we really be aiming a death penalty at newbies and fresh characters? No other game I know of, does this. Everybody else either has it fair across-the-board, or newbies/fresh characters are given a break when they first start the game.

    Not Nightly Starbound, oh no.

We're gonna punish fresh characters more harshly than established characters.

You did it, You hit the nail on the head harder than alcohol hit Brittney Spears career, This change annoys hardened players, and devastates new ones to prevent abuse in a way that is not remotely sustainable. nobody wins.

That's the part that sucks the most, really.

This is done to prevent "abuse" by hording ore to dump in the refinery only when you need it, right?

Well, crap, you get so many stinking pixels out of gold, silver, etc... that you can take a T10 character, go to a T3 planet (not T4, because you don't want Titanium or any later ores because they don't work in the refinery) and you are pretty much invincible. Nothing on a T3 planet can hurt you if you have T10 armor. Heck, you won't even shiver on a Snow/Ice planet at night if you're in T10. You one-shot everything, and nothing can hurt you.

But you can get oodles and oodles of pixels out of all that plat, gold, diamonds, etc you find.

The Ore Drop Penalty does NOTHING to a T10 character. Who DOES get hurt? The poor T1 dropping stuff they need to get a foothold in the game (ie, the very character who can't even use the exploit as the Refinery is T2!).

Iron armor for sure, getting 20 core fragments can be a pain going through all that obsidian. And you'll need to have an established farm by then/done a ton of hunting. or go up and down a lot because hunger runs out fast. If I could craft it I'd have full silver armor and a gold pickaxe axe atm and only 13 fragments. Or I've just had realy bad luck with finding fragments.

I also think it'll bore new players before they get 20 since theres so little you can craft or find on a single t1 planet. More so with surface caves not generating and the only generation I seem to be finding on my starter plantets are the mines/ individual houses. Plus unsheltered npcs seem to be dead everywhere I go since I'm just finding pixels on the ground.

I was more talking about killing yourself to teleport back to the surface, but yeah, that too. :p

Alpha builds are Alpha, so stuff is broken, sure.

But seriously? Did they really reduce the hunger meter from Live?

    /sigh

It was already annoyingly short, and having a bow was pretty much required for getting meat (and half of the time you got stupid leather instead of meat which is only good for 3 items in the entire game last I checked). But said bow is almost powerless beyond T1 to the point T10 characters are better off backtracking to T1 just to farm meat (unless you're a human than you can do burgers, which maxes your hunger meter out on Live).

I don't understand why people are crying about the "kill yourself to teleport back to the surface" when even on Live, it is better to Save&Exit rather than commit suicide. Both do the same thing ("Teleport" you to your ship) but Save&Exit lets you keep your pixels.

Heck, I Save&Exit frequently anyways, because the power company around here blows and I hate the idea of losing 1hr+ of progress to a 5-second power outage or brownout.

It's because people are stupid. and the devs will likely include persistent locations in the future, so this is building up to being trapped for all eternity underground because you've fallen and you can't get up.

There do not have to be penalties. When i play normal mode i dont want to be punished for a simple mistake, If im playing something harder than normal, then yes there should be something to punish the player for getting killed.

Currently the biggest penalty for me is simply having to respawn, getting back to somewhere after dying is already a chore, even with boost techs, if you find a dungeon and die, you have to go all the way back, which can take up to 5 minutes. God forbid you have to do that in a mess of caves or you lose whatever ores you had at the time. that is overkill.

Kind of off topic but... If you get a tier 10 crossbow from a glitch guard, that crossbow functions as a viable hunting bow in pretty much any threat level whatsoever. keep in mind however it has to be a regular one, NOT a flaming arrow/poison bolt one. Needless to say, I got one and I never, ever have any meat shortages ever again now. I can hunt tier 10 monsters with very little effort. (the crossbow does flipping 850 damage a hit. and is MUCH faster than the crappy hunting bow it's nice to say the least!)

So I spent ALL of today gathering the needed 20 core fragments. I got the last ones I needed by making a mud bridge over lava and then up to the ores. I dung through a ton of obsidian and got a bunch of bug crashes to reach them.

I got them and then hit my pick to remove the tower I was on and it kept going (It was silver) and took out the bridge so my character fell in the lava. Quickly hit save + exit. Log back in and character is on ship dead and all ores are gone for good.

So yeah, lost my whole days work. Don't care that much i lost the ores, what I care about is that its another day stuck in the boring starter forests biome (That all my character seem to start in)with a broken ship. And I'll have to spend ages mining more obsidian. Which is just so boring I turned the game off at the thought of doing it again.

If you can't get the mod listed above to work I have a similar one in my signature that's working for me. I'm real sick of Starbound trying to play every genre against the middle and as a direct result screwing up at all of them.
