Don't starve is limited by it's incredibly limited INVENTORY space. So no that doesn't count at all

Even though Starbound as a whole is incredibly easy to mod, and even make mods for.
Novakids ended up being a race mod for a while before they came out in the late Giraffe stages, because they took so long to make.

There's something a mod has fixed because of the apparent lack of sense of the commons.

I kind of wish that for casual mode, where starvation is NOT a thing, that our stack limits would be increased and the food rotting mechanics would be completely ignored.

Now I just sell food instead of stocking it, and I have the hardest time keeping my pets happy because they eat so freaking much and I can only give them one piece of food at a time. I eventually got tired of it and made my own personal edits to the canned food item, making it stack up to 1000. Then I just spawnitem'd 1000 of it and stuck it in my pet food bowl. I DON'T CARE IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, PET. YOU'RE EATING IT ANYWAY.

At all? Really? The stack sizes are negotiable. The food pouch size can also be reduced.
How about now? Any further problems?

I'll usually be the last one to suggest using mods to fix a developer's poor decisions, but there are a couple things about your situation that make me say it's not only the best choice but i am surprised you haven't just done this and moved on. For one, Starbound from the start has stated that it will be designed to be heavily modable. It's not just a possibility with this game, it's encouraged. The second is early in your post you mentioned being a software engineer. I sincerely doubt the people who put mods in so far are software engineers. Not even those with Frackin' Universe: Currently the largest starbound mod and from what i can see the most well put together. Some even call it manditory. And thrid, There is even a mod on the workshop that fixes your biggest issue aptly named "Food Stack".

But i do seriously ask though, with starbound being heralded as being highly modable and your status with computer knowledge why would you and your posse all sooner kick the game you enjoy to the curb rather than just do the simple task of modding the game to your liking and proceed with having fun with it? Another step from there you could have turned this topic from "We're all leaving" to "Hey Chucklefish, we see that you don't stack food because of expiration and have fixed it for you. Feel free to use it in an update so certain mods don't become almost required".

Reducing space for the food pouch would leave a lot of empty space. The two games ARE DIFFERENT GAME GENRES. The solution from one will not work perfectly with the other =_=

Sad part is that having to make mods to change aspects of the game's basic functionality shouldn't even be a requirement, yet here we are. Hopefully the devs pay attention to the mod content and implement the most popular stuff. I know they've done so in the past.

I mean, I understand that the devs have a distinct vision for how their game should develop and grow, but fact of the matter is that what they want to implement and what the players like or want themselves is often not the same as of late.

That's the best you got? If you're going to refute it, I'm going to need a bit more than that.
I'm going to bed. If you don't like the idea I need a better reason. See you tomorrow.

The need for mods shouldn't be an issue, for instance if devs like a mechanic in a game and feel it is balanced and the player base is ok with that mechanic but you personally are not a fan of that mechanic there are mods that can help you out with your preferances.

Don't worry, in next updates food with the same state will stack together, for example food that's in the "fresh" category and of the same type will stack together, same for others.

This will happen because it's very easy to implement, trust me I am a doctor,

Do you have a source for that or are you just wishful thinking?

Sadly just wishful thinking, but based on how this topic seem to be popping up very frequently in the forums I am thinking this solution is more than just me hopping for something :).

Putting myself in their shoes, this is what I would be doing, and as a programmer I know that it isn't a hard thing to do.

I recommend watching Sven plays starbound then. He talks about quite a few of the decisions they made during development. It's by Armagon who worked on the game.

So basically what you're saying is this: Instead of going to casual and running a farm on the side to make some extra money. I want to make LOTS of money and because I can't do that as easily- IE having 200 Pineapples in my inventory, and being able to sell all of them. The game is broken and needs to be fixed.

Honestly I've played only 60 hours into the game, I've never played the Alpha so I've admittedly don't have any reference there but it was a very small wait time until refrigerators. You're acting like it's the end of the world that the food goes bad as fast as it does, yet everything can be optimized so it's almost immediately in a fridge/etc. Same with shipping the produce if you really want to make lots of money. I make 20-40k easily within the confines of how fast the food grows and it takes very little- to no effort to move the food to the foodstation which could be moved closer to the source, same with all refrigerator units. I'm sorry you feel that the game doesn't meet up to whatever quality standards your apparent software engineering gives you. There is a workshop you could create mods for- but again I feel this stems to the problem that you and your friends are lazy and do not want to actually do work for money in that way. You say it's completely dead, you tell me your friend can't see a blinking notification at the top left corner which means he's not managing himself well. It really sounds like you all are casual gamers, and need to move down to said difficulty. That would be a simple solution to all the problems you listed, I don't find the system broken. I know other people do because there's mods for that as I'm sure you're aware of after putting 200+ hours into the game.
Which, in my opinion would be worth a lot more than 15 dollars.

These are all just assumptions based on the problems, but maybe the problem isn't the game- but you and your friends wanting to make a difficulty less difficult? Is things not being able to stack annoying? YES- but do you even ~NEED~ to make money in that way, are there other ways to play the game? No, and yes. You don't need to farm, I'm not sure how many casual players do farm- and I'd presume if they did it's for decor/to make money. So why are you complaining about a problem that's easily fixed, and I don't mean just about the changing of difficulty, I mean your entire system sounds ridiculously complicated for something really simple. Making food and all that stuff should be RIGHT next to the source. You used the term "running" so I presume it's far away, otherwise the exaggeration is not needed.

Yeah, but if a Dev comes a long and see her points. I'd like it to be seen from the perspective that the game is fine in my opinion. Not necessarily trying to convince OP to stay. Their non-efficiency attitude annoyed me. :p

Everyone can play the game differently and enjoy it, I just enjoy it in the exact opposite way this person does. I don't want everything handed to me, I feel like managing things in the game was a constant- from torches, ropes, platforms, food, building blocks (When it comes to exploring lava planets.) and if they really played 200 hours in and didn't have a problem with it until they decided.

"I'm not making money fast enough, and my friend can't keep track of his hunger which if he had played 200 hours into the game, he could at least glance at it every so often."

That's all I was saying. They have all the means to fix the issue- yet none of the willingness to change how they are seeing the problem. When you go into "survival" you don't get the luxury of certain things for a reason- not saying stacking food was ever a thing as far as I was aware but the point is it's supposed to be challenging. If they didn't want to manage food, or even farm. They could have easily put down the game sooner. I just don't understand where the logic comes from and this post comes more at getting people against Chuckle fish and feeding the mentality that this is a "bad game." - Not quoting op here but that's what I feel is being implied.

@Makaifren is this your only concern? well for me, the shocking and boring part of 1.0 was the fact that nothing really changed since the game launched years ago (i didn't play for 2 years i think). i invested +20 hours into the game just to discover there was literally no new content (except for the story missions - which dropped off in quality extremely quickly)

no new content, no new cool weapons or armor, no awesome new features, no fun vehicles (tbh the 2 aviable vehicles are useless garbage)

to bring it to the point: the only thing that had changed a bit was when to obtain which items/ores/crafting stations + the maximum obsolete main story that doesnt even grant you a reward or any kind of worthy experience
