Dear Devs, Any chance of this happening?

Hi, I am wondering if there is any chance of having a video option to apply a filter, kinda like the snes emulators do that smooth out the image in realtime so its not so pixelated? I mean I am fine either way but just curious.

Also do you plan to release a proper mod kit for the game a bit after release? Not sure if I asked this before or what the answer was. Modding can make a game like this last forever, hell I still play oblivion with all diff mods to this day. I mean people will figure out a way even if there is no support for it, they did it with terraria, and one of the best terraria modders has already pre-ordered starbound as well and plans to make mods for it.

Last question: Will there be grappling hooks? I loved these things in Terraria.

No idea about the first two, but i do believe they are making a Ninja Rope thing, they say some stuff about it in the Daily Updates not too long ago.

  3. It was suggested before, and Tiy provided sample screenshots. So maybe? Or at least, it's on Tiy's radar.
Check the "List of Announced Game Information" thread; there's some info on modding there. They have plans for an API (post-release), but the game is meant to be quite modifiable regardless (items, objects, etc. are already easy to implement).
As mentioned, there will be a ninja rope.

Even if there aren't filters in the vanilla game, someone could try and mod it in.

Yeah, i'd play the game either way, but having an offical ingame filter option would be cool.

Man, that looks amazing. Now how about a mod that rotates through art filters on different planets.

  9. Indeed. KAG also uses the same filter as one option that smooths all the game graphics, so i think DEVs can really do the same, it would be just great! :D

You would want to go with the xBR filter - but in this game it would be kinda pointless given how this game doesn't need to be rescaled since it is made with variable resolutions and fov's in mind. And it has a zoom function.. sooo..

The game is made to look retro, ol'school. That is a cool game. I would recommend you to play starforge for a next gen sandbox building/adventure game. :)

You should also check my blog (signature) to know why so many people like the looks and feels of ol'school games

Those sample screenshots of the smoothing are really easy on the eyes, aren't they

Ugh... those filters just look like the game was done with watercolors... I love pixel art, pretty much what draws me to games like this.

I like them personally. I'm drawn to starbound for its artistic style and visual aesthetic; but even if it were smoothed out some the base style would stay the same.

Filters are bound to be optional, and I personally do like them and play all my SEGA Genesis-Megadrive / SNES emulated games with ones like these. But they are not _that_ necessary because Starbound is a modern game, its' default resolution is high and its' graphics aren't hurtful for eyes. So I can live without them. Still, optional filters = good idea. Excluding GUI/text, of course, that stuff should stay crisp.

I think you could really only speak for yourself, here. I'd definitely be looking to upgrade the graphics once a mod is available.

I personally love having graphical filters in games, while I love playing in the original style, some filters can really extend on that style of retro, and some can completely change it. I see no harm in including optional filters, optional content only makes the game attractive to more people, as it doesn't detract from their experience, and only adds to others'.
