Likewise. I made a new character whose ship loaded into a blank world, and can't be played in Single player, coming up with this error and crashing instantly after every try. My server crashes every time I try to host, even though it was working a moment ago.

All this was sparked by my character trying to sit in the pilot's chair while in blackness, I think.

I've started compiling crash reports. Mind doing these 2 things for me?

    1. Find your crash log. It's a file called starbound.log located in your Starbound directory, which you can find by right-clicking the game in Steam and clicking Properties -> Local Files -> Browse Local Files.
    2. Open up the crash log, CTRL+C its contents and upload them to Pastebin.
    3. Reply with the link so I can document it.

Getting this as well on the server, people are reporting black backgrounds on their characters with no planet in view, and they cannot beam down or anything or they will crash:

All I want to do is be able to play with my husband, I have gone so far as to literally uninstall and reinstall twice and I still get the same error. Please, can someone post a fix for this? A lot of these crash threads just get abandoned with no resolution, from what I've read of them trying to research this issue and this will literally drive me insane.

I was able to start playing again by completely removing everything inside the Universe folder. However, that means deleting all of your worlds. And there's nothing stopping this from happening again, should you encounter another planet with the StarBTree.

it was playing fine two hours ago and i came back from lunch and suddenly nothing works.

i hope there's a fix that doesn't involve deleting all my characters and their worlds...

Going off of XGShadowstar's suggestion, I systematically deleted files in the universe folder until fixed. What I found is that you only need to delete your universe.chunks files in order to fix the problem. I have absolutely no idea what that file does but when I went back into the game, my home planet and ship were fine. Hope this helps

i just tried that and it got rid of that error!

unfortunately, i almost immediately got a new error message...

first message says "access violation detected at 0x637b08 (Read of address 0)"

    then i get this mess:

Out of curiosity, what mods do you guys have installed? Could it have something to do with what's going on?

I'm running Avali and Kemono race mods, the simple custom character mod thing, the fully custom ship mod, and the Nothing mod.

I'm having the same issue, no mods installed. It started after I tried to beam to my friend's ship which was traveling, now I can't play either MP or SP.

    EDIT:

I found out what the issue was. For some reason, file called "Universe.chunks" was corrupted and had to be deleted in order to make server hosting and playing possible again. I'll provide simple steps on how to fix this issue:
    1. Go to ...\Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound\universe
    2. Locate a file called 'Universe.chunks'
    3. Delete it

After that, everything should work like a charm. As far as I know, you will not lose any progress! Please let me know if this information was helpful.

im getting a similar error: http://pastebin.com/kPuzdwfD (pre-Universe.chunks delete)

http://pastebin.com/CzPqEdSZ (Post Universe.chunks delete, post restart to clear logs)

http://pastebin.com/3YrhzNrU (After game crashes, using an Apex)
http://pastebin.com/Cs8JXwkY (after regular exit, using an Avian)
I only did these ones to test to see if the crash was corrupting the Chunks, codex and quest files. The fact that they didnt have to be regenerated when the game was exited normally seems to indicate that the files are indeed a result of the crash.

http://pastebin.com/bwt2MVvA This is a crash after a non-crash exit of the game. the chunks, codex and quest files are not regenerated. I'm pretty sure at this point that its not caused by corrupted chunks/codex/quest files.

http://pastebin.com/SR2JvQ1h (Post delete of Universe.chunks, Universe.dat, PlayerCodex.db, and PlayerQuests.db) It stikes me as odd that there's no log of the deleted files regenerating, as there was in previous logs. I wonder if it means that the files were corrupt, and when I deleted them, the fresh copies were re-created, but since no corruption was detected, no log was created? I'm guessing that the crash is responsible for the corruption in some part?

http://pastebin.com/mqTpkrAE ( New base race character, a Hylotl. notice how the errors related to tabularasa are recoverable, and dont actually break the game. this may not mean its not part of the problem, mind you, just that its not something that crashes the game on its own)

Im running SMEE (Starbound: Mass Effect Edition). and ACCM (Another Character Creation Menu)

Whats interesting for me, is that I can create new base chars (Human, Twitch, Florin, Apex, etc) and it works fine. The error only pops up with the SMEE mod's expanded chars.

I dont think SMEE is responsible though, since it was running fine before this, and I have friends running my exact same files (Threw them up on dropbox) without issue.

It seems like the common denominator is the game itself.

I deleted the Universe.chunks file, and that didnt work.

Maybe mine is a different problem that just has similar end results?

"Error: UniverseServer: error during worker pooled job: MapException: Entry with key '' already present." is probably the base error, which causes the hangup. My guess is that everything else is a cascading failure of that error. note that that's a [space] char between 2 single quotes, not a double quote.

the "Error: Access violation detected at 0x637b08 (Read of address 0)" error only seems to happen if I wait until the program self terminates due to the NetSocket timing out due to lack of a server-side response. If I kill the process manually beforehand, it never shows, but the hangup is still there.

Since the crash happens on any and all of the expanded race chars, I'm thinking that the issue is in something that the 3 have in common: the ship itself (normandsr1). If thats the case, i'm gonna see if I can cut out some of the stuff that they added to see if removing something causes things to start working. I'll update this thread if i find anything.

Will tell events leading up to crash, in case it helps debug things. Opened up a server to play with friends. Friends played with me, no problems. They logged off, I continued exploring my world. I decide to save and quit just in case any crashes happen since I'd been playing a while. Saved and quit without any errors. Tried to restart in single player mode, with server still running. Error (see pastebin link). Closed server, tried to start single player. Still error, of same nature. Quit out of game entirely, and restarted. Tried to go in single player, still error.

FINALLY, a decent report with a list of mods and EVERYTHING ELSE necessary to reproduce the issue.

I asked Snoop about the tabularasa error, and was told it is recoverable.

It seems like there's some incompatibility between SMEE and other mods which change character creation.

There's *ALSO* an issue with the base game (that's the DB indexing issue), but it looks like you just had the bad luck to get hit with all of them simultaneously.

Try running just one of SMEE or ACCM at a time, then both if neither has an issue by itself (probably need to relocate your player and universe dirs when you switch out mods).

Yeah... I'm a Computer-engineer-in-training, so.. I have experience with having to fix bugs... which means I know what people want/need to see for debugging or general helpdesk stuff.

Yeah, since things seem to happen okay even after the tabularasa error, I figured it wasnt a real issue. Also, I dont have tabularasa loaded, so i figured that was part of the problem.

I tried with "simple Extended char creation mod" and that... just didnt work at all, so ACCM is still more compatible than others, but I didnt expect all mods to play perfectly well together anyway. As long as its not the cause of major game glitches, I can bear it.

so there really is a bug in the base game? I was starting to wonder.... but since the game seemed to be recovering from the DB issue on its own, i was ignoring it until it became apparent that it was the cause of something, not just a symptom. I deleted them fully once after a crash, and it didnt give me a warning, so I figured the recovery routines were robust enough to handle things.

Okay, so I was also posting on another thread (the one specific to SMEE), and their "if it crashes, reload with the same char" seems to work as a work around, not sure why though.

If I disable BOTH SMEE and ACCM, the game runs no problem (thru 6 new chars)
If I disable ONLY SMEE, ACCM seems to work fine (though i have no other race mods to test this any further, ill look into that sometime)
If I disable ONLY ACCM..... im not sure, since I have no way to create a SMEE char, and as previously stated, I could always create the base race chars no problem. This trend persists here.
If I have BOTH SMEE and ACCM loaded, It crashes at least once when the char is created, but works after that, though I've seen some intermittent crashes, they are recovered by restarting and reloading. (tested over 5 chars, reloaded 10 times each, logs indicate that the DB errors only occur after a crash, and its always a "server crashes/lags-till-time-out, forcing the socket to auto-disconnect, which causes an exception." Personally, I think that this means the game needs a way to handle the server crashing without taking the game down with it, but... Beta: 'nuff said.)

    Thanks for your help, RyLesh.

Yeah, I've tracked the missing-block down to a client timing out and hosing the server. Can't tell anything useful beyond that, though.

Gotta say, it's not really present anymore on our server with the latest stable release, I think the changes helped.. Are other people still having this issue with the latest stable release? (Beta v. Enraged Koala - Update 6, protocol 642).
