Dark Area

Hey guys,

Maybe a very stupid question to ask, but here goes.

So I created a new character and came across a dark area on a planet. Only that particular area is in the shadows and I was wondering why. Does anyone else know what it means? Is there special ore down there or a rare item to be found?

 

Was it in a long ravine? Think it was below the "surface" as it were.

 

This right here, basically. The worldgen will sometimes cause a zone to end up below what we could describe as the cave line. From that point downwards, light from outside is blocked by the background, which happens to be a permanent fixture of bedrock upon which other background tiles can be placed. So, when you do get a ravine like this, it will appear totally dark. Toss some torches in one and you'll see what I mean.

 

Yes, that pretty much makes a lot of sense. I threw torches in before but it was still pretty dark, but yeah, it was in a ravine.

Feel pretty stupid for asking actually, since it's such a logical thing. But well, you never know, right? hehe

 

Not a stupid thing to ask at all. As a matter of fact, now it has me wondering if a "dark" biome could be made. Either no sunlight or a very short day cycle, luminous plants and mobs...hmmm. If it can be done, I'm sure some modder is already on the job. (I hope so, anyway. I'd like to see that. )

 

Those are kind of cool.. I may use that cavern background as part of my base.

 

Yeah they would be very cool. A dark biome planet. A special armor could be developed that turns the player into an enormous light bulb.

The biome could work cool with Novakids too, if they'd have the passive ability of perma-glowing.

 

One of the generation mods has dark planets. Either without any day at all, or just a bit of twilight and then dark again.
