Dangers of letting Strangers onto your Server?

My friends and i have a 12 slot server,but there are only 5 of us who play (12 slots was the minimum).I have thought about letting other people play on it..sometimes i see people asking about a server they could play on,and i often consider it.I'm just wondering that if i were to let some strangers play on it,is there anything i should be wary of?Like if they turned out to be a total DBag AHole,is there anything they could do that could screw me or my friends over in any way? Thanks.

 

You run the risk of griefers whenever you invite an unknown to any server. Also, be mindful that all it takes is a party invite for somebody to loot your ship entirely.

Best bet is to talk to the person on some sort of voice chat, unless it's somebody who you've gotten to know before.

There needs to be a mod that locks particular areas from being messed with, as well as a mod that prevents others from looting your ship.

 

Detecting these kinds of people are hard, but I suggest you check their background or have them say something about themselves. Just a short survey or whatnot.
Anyways I'm looking for a server to play on. Can I join yours? Lol.

Yes, don't do it. There are no officially supported server tools for administration right now. You need to rely on thirdparty modder created server tools if you want to have any chance at all of protecting your server, but even with those you will still not be able to do much other than kick and ban people. Though because this game does not use a global account with characters tied to it and, instead, just lets you make X number of characters freely, people can easily jump bans. People will join your server, destroy the spawn world, put traps at the beam-down location and torment players with hacks and modded items.

Until a proper (starrybound) server tool has been released, opening your server to the public is a nightmare. I find it ridiculous that it has become the norm for game developers to release a game with a multiplayer component and not include proper administrative tools. I realize it's just beta, but the multiplayer exists already. With it should come proper tools. It's very difficult to have a non-private server right now.

 

Always do a backup of your savefiles in case you let somebody on your server and invite him to your party. A backup of the universe file would be helpfull aswell.

 

Actually, you might not be serious, but I believe that based on how they answer seemingly random questions it could determine a lot more than face value.
