I'm all for environmental challenges, they tend to be more fun and touch more parts of the game in interesting ways. Consider the game FTL, simple game, with some basic room based environmental gameplay elements, really fun for what it was!. In environments without oxygen for example, having that be an element to consider in base design would be great. Snow, rain, waves on the coast, food!, volcanoes, lava, etc all good ideas.

The weather system looks fairly nice so far. It would be interesting if rain could cause small pools of water to form on the surface... but to keep from drowning a world out some kind of evaporation mechanic would be needed as well I think. I definitely want to see dangerous weather & environmental conditions: Erupting volcanoes, heat waves, dust storms, lightning, meteor showers, radiation spikes, blizzards, etc.

Remember that water can pour out of the world if there are no back wall, so rain wouldn't be able to flood the world anyways. I think no evaporation is necessary in this case, but I definitely like your idea of rain creating water.

oooh! if rain created physical water, but drains out normally without a back wall, it adds a lot of thing to consider when making mines and such on a rainy planet. you should make a "rain-catcher to prevent your open air mines (you know, big holes in the ground that happens to lead to an extensive cave network) from flooding. and it would also be neat if there was ways to set up pipes to water your crops, and you could use rainwater to have a surplus of water to do so with. or having the rainwater power a turbine to generate power! the possibilities are many!
