i am making a post here to suggest the possibility of explosive, poisonous or otherwise hazardous gasses that can be found in caves. say you were exploring a cave deep under the ground and you had to use an explosive to clear a particularily hard vein of minerals, but then to discover that you accidentally set of a chain reaction of explosions due to gass motes being there? on the other hand, you could go cave diving to find these gasses and harvest them for your own uses as well, like making potent explosives or rare fuels to sell or use on your own. using a jetpack or energy weapon in gassfilled areas could be a death sentance and i feel this could be a good addition for particularrily difficult planets. what do you guys think? EDIT: a suggestion for a list was posted here so ill try and make a few here, if you have suggestions, post them on the thread! methane: highly flammable gas that is common in underground caves on planets that have alot of biological value. methane is an invisible gas but it stinks so you should easily be able to tell if you're surrounded in it. sulphur: a non-flammable but HIGHLY acidic gas that will destroy your lungs should you breathe it. sulphur is a visible slow-moving gas that should be easy to bypass if you're properly prepared. found more commonly in vulcanoes or deep underground magma caves. Highly concentrated carbon dioxide - Is heavier than air, and thus concentrates in low places. Where it is low enough, you can walk through it without it causing any harm, but if there's enough of it and it reaches your head, then it deals damage. To get through a place where carbon dioxide is in high concentration around you, you need to jump constantly to get through a place like that or you need to have proper equipment. Hallucinogenic spores: It would be simple air, but full of airborne spores that cause hallucinations when breathed in.) - causes impossible images and makes you see hallucinations. That includes but is not limited to: impossible creatures, ceiling or floor disappearing(invisible), strange sounds, walls changing colours, walls talking to you, water looking like lava or some other liquid, rabbit's drinking tea, company of mad hatters and so on. Smog: found in abandoned highly polluted cities(industrial preferably). Gives a small debuff. Can cause small amounts of damage if you stay exposed for extended periods of time. SOME WAYS YOU WOULD FIND GASSES the obvius gas motes: ( THESE MAY BE HEAVIER THAN AIR IN WICH CASE THEY WONT GO UP AND WILL RATHER STAY ALONG THE FLOOR) these are simple gas clouds found in underground caverns, should you let this gas find its way to the surface without any way of keeping it contained, (be it the cave or a gas tank) it will be lost in the atmosphere. this type of natural gas containment usually occurs when there are living creatures/plants producing them. wet gas: this containment of gas occurs when gas is pressurized so much that it has turned liquid. if you dig into one of these caverns filled with wetgas it will immideatly burst out of the opening you made with your pickaxe. (you clumsy cave diver) this will cause huge knockback as all the wetgas in the cavern turn back to airborne gas, (basicly a slow-moving explotion). this form of gas is very easy to havest being so condensed and easy to pump out. crystalised gas: this is made when gasses have chemical reactions with other elements in the surroundings, turning their molecular structure to a solid material. these are the easiest forms of gas to havest, as they hang around the cave walls as crystals. these solid gases are completely harmless but they need thorough refining to actually me usefull. you can take the crystals to your base, where the scientists can seperate the elements in the crystal turning it back to its base components of the gas AND the mineral in question. not all of these are my ideas and they should be credited to their respective suggesters, i just brought the idea up. will be updating this more in the future btw. (i know this has been dead for a while but im harldy on here anymore, but im not gone!) and enough with the farting jokes already.....
You should make a list of the gas types in the OP There could be -paralyzing gas that fades away in a few seconds after leaving you vulnerable to attacks -a gas that makes your movement extremely slow maybe even a gas that emits a scent that lures monsters?
I think this is incredibly interesting! Not just as a hazard, but as a general gameplay element. If we model the behaviour of gasses, we can have harmful gasses (poisons), useful gasses (helium, neon, whatever), or any other kinds of gasses that might be good for crafting etc.
Maybe the gazes would be randomly generated, with different properties, effects and colors so people could explore them (FIRE THE FLAMETHROWER, WALK INTO GREEN MIST, LIFE FOR !!SCIENCE!!)
I think the Pixeljunk Shooter games would be a great source of inspiration for this topic. Liquids that neutralize caustic gases, magnetically-charged/reactive liquids... this could go far.
Good idea. A few gas types if you need any: 1. (Highly concentrated carbon dioxide?) - Is heavier than air, and thus concentrates in low places. Where it is low enough, you can walk through it without it causing any harm, but if there's enough of it and it reaches your head, then it deals damage. To get through a place where carbon dioxide is in high concentration around you, you need to jump constantly to get through a place like that or you need to have proper equipment. 2. Hallucinogenic gas(perhaps with a biologic origin? It could be simple air, but full of airborne spores that cause hallucinations when breathed in.) - causes impossible images and makes you see hallucinations. That includes but is not limited to: impossible creatures, ceiling or floor disappearing(invisible), strange sounds, walls changing colours, walls talking to you, water looking like lava or some other liquid, rabbit's drinking tea, company of mad hatters and so on. 3. Smog - found in abandoned highly polluted cities(industrial preferably). Gives a small debuff. Can cause small amounts of damage if you stay exposed for extended periods of time. I'll add more if i think of anything fun.
ill just add those to the op tyvm, btw guys i did not expect people to support this idea this much.... iz gud =D
I love this idea! What about you being able to actually see the gases? You could just have coluorful flog floating across your screen, indicating that you are currently in an area full of gas. Or instead, there could be a gas detecting item that tells you the type of gas, hazards etc. It could be just a handheld item or glasses that scan the whole area.
i think SOME gasses should be visible while you need certin tools to warn you when there is invisible gasses around, i dont think getting suffocated with no warning is a very fun mechanic......... but you can smell certin gasses, this prevents gasses from murdering newer characters. example, you can see steam but you cant see hydrogen.
Mmmm.. steam huh? Maybe that could indicate you getting towards very, very hot layers. Oh oh, and collect hydrogen for hydrogen bombs! Doesn't that sound like fun?
Actually, the gasses could be both mineable and a hazard. Allow me to explain: Gasses, like that used in your stove/central heater are extracted from the Earth. The underground deposits where the gasses are extracted from are not 'hollow', but fine sand where the gas is located between. "gaseous materials" always go to the largest space available, and that results in mining gas. Simply put: Gas could be extracted from blocks (if said blocks can contain gas, and if they can do contain it). Gas hazards/pockets can develop in already hollow caves underground.
These "gasses" could be a horrible nightmare for newer players due to a drafty area causing the gas to shift and maybe block entrances, but could be a marvelous supply for high level charecters to use as traps, weapons of mass destruction, and forms of fuel. I have an idea that could be usefull to the earlier mentioned item that could detect and warn you of gasses, a "Kino" this is a reference to the Stargate Universe series (SGU) which is on Netflix, This "Kino" is a floating silver orb with a camera on the front of it controlled by a remote with a screen (This could be a small screen in the corner of you GUI) The "Kino" detects the atmospheric properties of a planet before the SGU charecters go onto the surface of the planet, this could be used for the Starbound gasses. The Kino could be either a treasure item or a craftable item. If it ends up a craftable item it should be difficult to make due to the difficulty of building a floating orb with so many senory mechanics in a small orb about a foot wide.
