And by this, I don't just mean lava.

As an Idea the environments can damage players in a number of ways.

Acid rain: If the atmosphere is right, the planet can rain acid rain. this will burn away at unprotected players. This can also affect uncovered animals and plants.

Extreme Temperatures: If a planet is very close or very far from a star it will be hot or cold. With out the right clothes a player will take damage over time and eventually freeze or burn to death.

Suffocation: On an asteroid or derelict space station there is a lack of air. and on some planets where are different types of air, ones without oxygen. So if we go in with out proper air supply you will die.

Hostel Plant Life: Some jungle-like planets have very little nutrias in the ground, and there for reliy on other forms of food, this being you and your allies.

Heat Vents: In the deep oceans there are areas where great amounts of heat are expelled, this would cause damage to all caught in the blast.

No Magnetic Fields: Some planet's iron cores have cooled down, and therefore have no magnetic fields. This means the planets will be more affected by the sun's solar winds and solar flares. This will raise the temperature of the planet and fry most technology. And its not like the mass amounts of radiation helps either. (Credit of Idea to Zuleyka)

Meteor Storms: When large groups of asteroids come into the atmosphere of the planet, it can be a beautiful sight. Unfortunitly, some of these asteroids will not burn up completely and can land on the surface, crushing and burning everything around the impact. Best way to survive would be to hide underground, build a shield generator, or simply dodge them.

More Ideas will also be posted in yellow.

I like the idea about a hostel planet life :D
Being in an environment that always seeks to assimilate you, and natural traps lie at every corner sounds like a nice adventure to me :D

    Thanks bro

Hope they've already thought about this ^^

I approve of this idea. This would allow the developers greater flexibility in, and more reason to, terraform planets. I don't think derelict stations or ships are going to be in the game, at least at launch, but the developers have mentioned asteroids being in. I'm inclined to think that hostile fauna may already be in the game, but it would be interesting to see nonetheless.

I especially like the idea about the acid rain, which would invert the entire concept of the surface being safe and the underground hostile. Perhaps a planet with an extremely dangerous surface could give players a legitimate reason to play the "dwarf challenge" from Terraria.

I really doubt we'll have to ask for hostile plantlife. =P
But yes, dangerous environments is really something that would be nice to have- extreme heat / cold would be pretty cool if you're responsible for it as well.

I'm pretty sure acid is already planned by the devs, and it would act more like lava. But I think that acid rain would be a pretty good way to add some challenge to the game, along with the other suggestions you mentioned.

I am with you on this one!
As for damaging/dangerous environments, if there was going to be any, there just HAS to be Extreme heat and Extreme Cold.
See, when it comes to a science-fiction exploration kinda game, I'm all about making it feel like one is really exploring space.
If we look at the average planet in the universe, most are either going to be a ball or frozen rock (Extreme Cold) or a mass or overheated gas or radiation scorched ground (Extreme Heat).
Of course, I'm all for having amazing planets with crazy plant life or alien buildings or any of the other great ideas listed in this thread: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/what-types-of-planets-are-you-hoping-for.801/
But if the universe is to feel like a universe at all, there has just got to be planets that are desolate because they either have no atmosphere and no heat, or have a toxic atmosphere and retain too much heat.

    As for some new ideas:
There could be planets with unstable footing. The surface could be made up of crags and as you walked on it, pieces would fall apart beneath you. Additionally, the environment is ever changing, so a nice mine shaft you just dug is suddenly flooded with rock/ice/lava and what you thought was tranquil flatland has suddenly become a mountain.

There could be planets with gravity that is too strong. Without a specially powered suit it is hard to move, falling objects hurt a lot more, and the enemies are super powerful from living in super strong gravity.

There could be planets with no/low magnetic fields, which would cause the surface to be blasted with Solar Wind, filling it with heat and radiation. This could translate to either a completely desolate surface, or a bunch of weiiiird radioactively transformed monsters. A planet with low magnetic fields would have an amazing aurora (I think), which could be an awesome background animation.

There could be planets with lots of debris in its atmosphere, which would cause a near constant barrage of small but deadly meteors on the surface.

There could be planets that has space/time distortions, which would cause all sorts of crazy shit to happen. Such as, an enemy you just killed goes back in time and is alive again, or you're suddenly transported to some random point on the map, or some random material suddenly materializes in front of you, be that rock, lava, or twenty monsters. Basically there should be some little portals or something that randomly hit all over the map. If one hits near you watch out! Anything could pop out! If one hits you then be prepared, any random thing could happen!

Earthquakes and cracks/holes opening up in the terrain could also be viable, for very unstable planets. You wouldnt want to stay there were long, and would need somewhat high-tech gear to get around, planets like that would break up and get flooded with lava at some point.

    Other things to be considered:

The damaging environment can happen sometimes, and not in everywhere. As a planet where the night cools down the temperature, what causes tremendous amounts of acid rain. But the night only happen once each one full translation cycle(in other words, one that-world-year) and in the rest of time, the planet is full of life. Or a part of the planet with unstable footing, because of huge volcanoes at the distance that throws rocks and debris.

TCBP(There Could Be Planets) with rainstorms. The soil can absorb a certain number of water, but it reaches a limit and then it starts flooding, killing living beings not prepared by drowning and impact, and throwing plants and rocks around.

TCBP with volcanoes. Volcanoes happens in stages. First the various small quakes, then the release of volcanic gas, that can petrify almost everything and finally lava and debris being throw and flowing.

TCBP... ok, there ARE planets with different materials. So, the damaging environment can have the same base, but NOT the same effect. Let's suppose a planet with lava that functions as freezing water, in other words, in certain temperatures, it expands instead of contracting. That sort of lava could generate an ICE VOLCANO with first some quakes, then freezing gas leaving the volcano and finally freezing liquid and debris flying around. The ice would create icebergs and even ice falling of the sky... let's consider that i've only scratched the surface of different materials here. ;)

I prefer to not say volcanoes, because that would fall under the "lava" category of hazards.

Added two new hazards, meteor storms and no magnetic fields.

What about pressure? If you get to deep into the ground or the water, you could start taking damage. And the damage would increase, the more deeper you would get! To counteract that, you could wear some special space-suits or only go into deep levels inside a mecha!
