1. Welcome to the Art + Literature sections! Some things to keep in mind:
    • It's a good idea to specify whether or not you're looking for critique from your fellow members. Please don't let friendly criticism turn into an all-out flame war.
    • Art and literature often deal with mature subjects. This is fine, but please keep in mind that we'd like to keep things PG-13. Don't let discussions get out of hand, and if they do, please alert a moderator.

Digital Cyan's 3D attempts thread

Discussion in 'Art' started by Cyan the Red, May 15, 2013.

  1. I've been attempting some low-poly 3D modelings on Maya, with mixed results...

here's my first attempt, a Hylotl:

    second, a Mindwurm:

and third, a request from King Toad:

  2. The mindwurm could look more furry, and the fins on the hylotl could look nicer when attached to the head.
The candy cane could be thicker on the inside. Also, there's a clear pause in the mindwurm walk cycle.

  5. Some Critiques, as required.

The blade itself is shorter than pictured, there is a white/metal spot missing on the upper part of the hilt, the upper part of the hilt is missing a rim along the top, and the tip of the sword it too round, and it should instead be angled.

Keep in mind that these are tiny nitpicks, and I honestly think it looks quite awesome.

I like it! Can we see it from another angle? Because it doesn't look very 3D from this angle.

    What program do you use?

Acccording to the OP, they used Autodesk Maya. It's free if you have a .edu email address, just as long as you don't mind not being able to make money off of your work. Blender is also pretty good and totally free, but it has a harsher learning curve.

On that note, most of these look great, especially for low-polycount models. I especially love how you got the mindwurm to animate so smoothly.

The only one that doesn't look absoloutly amazing is the candy cane harpoon. In this case, I would suggest beveling a little less. Right now, it looks too beveled to be a square, but not beveled enough to be round. I would also extrude all of the faces inward (or outward) to give the outer casing and cap some volume; the paper-thinness takes away from the overall model.

If you are rendering still images you should try Cinema 4d. way easier to get way better results.

Lop Poly modeling can be really challenging and I appriciate your effort.

But for creating your maps you should consider to use a tool like zBrush.

After importing you can push up the Polycount of your Model, add some Details, with sculpting and painting, and export the results in displacment/bump/normal and texture maps. Those can be added to your model in Maya, with some neat results.

  14. Hey! Thanks for the advice! :D I know about zBrush and normal maps, but I don't really feel quite ready to get into that kind of highpoly modelling just yet. I'm currently enrolled in a game design course and I'll teach myself that kind of sculpting later... these are just my first attempts.

    and thank you all so much for your kind words. ;u;
