Cutting down trees/Mining ore at the start of the game is too time consuming

At first it felt incredibly sluggish to me, but after a while I just got used to it. I noticed someone complained about how long it takes to even mine a single block which got me thinking.

What if when using the tool or manipulator to gather from an area, (3x3, 2x2, what have you), it took a base amount of time, for sake of my post we'll say 40 seconds. For the sake of it here I'll use the MM, you were mining one space instead of four, seeing as the MM energy is just being focused to one block, it would just take 10 seconds, as opposed to 40 or really any numbers could be substituted in here, but hopefully you all understand what I'm getting at. This way, mining a huge area will still take a decent amount of time, and if you're trying to just make a room or just dig for the sake of digging, you can still clear out a large amount of space, but if you just needed to get that single piece of copper ore, it would take you considerably less time. But the idea is that by going block by block, it would still take just as long to clear a 2x2 area, as it would if you were using the full effect of the MM, but if you just needed to use it to get a piece, or a couple pieces of ore, it may be slightly more time efficient to just single block mine it.

God I hope that made sense.

Gathering really needs to be faster. Coming from Terraria it takes an eternity in Starbound.

Do you remember the early game of Terraria? Because flailing away with a wood pick against rock is about the same using a comparable pick (stone) in Starbound.

I think the time it take is correct since you are supposed to want to upgrade to better stuff at some point.
I do agree that mining a single tile opposed to a square of them should take a fraction of the time.

people can't be that lazy right??? it took me 10 mins to make tools...

I understand what you're trying to say. Mining with the single block mode should be faster than the 2x2 mode, because it's focusing all its energy on one block, rather than spreading it out over 4 blocks.

    I like the idea.

Seconded. I think the numbers would have to be carefully tweaked so that the larger area mining still has a purpose, but being able to chip out certain elements would be good.

It's also worth pointing out that if you're trying to mine anything other than a little bit of cobblestone with the matter manipulator, you're doing it wrong. Make some tools.

Yeah, make tools ASAP. Still, the MM could have it's speed increased just a little, so the process of getting tools ASAP is a little less tedious.

It doesn't take that long really, what 10-20 seconds per tree? That's to long for you really? It takes to long to heal? Forgive me but straight up, put in a super casual mode then. Let all blocks break instantly on contact, and you never take damage, we'llcall it creative mode. =/

I hope that if the devs take the numerous complaints of "difficulty" into consideration, it's done in the form of a softcore mode or something akin to that, where you start with mining gear, some red stims etc. I for one had no issues with the game. I don't find it to be so difficult as to be un-fun, far from it. IT's such a breath of fresh air to not have my hand held the entire time, and not have everything instantly done. Things take to long? You can mine a 3X3 with a pickaxe, go to Terraria where you mine a single block at a time. Seriously I don't get how people can be having such a hard time. =/

Making the crafting path to bandages far more obvious (indeed, building it into the tutorial quests) would help alleviate all the "I have to carry a bed around with me!" posts.

I feel like that was a put two and two together thing, perhaps they thought people would just be smarter.....

Besides making it the second quest I couldn't see how it could be more obvious. I had my first bandage by the first night.

Having to mine single blocks in Terraria is made up for by the picks being faster to mine with

I should point out I have no experience of the tutorial quest line beyond "make a bow and hunt some meat!" as I'm playing on a Mac, and had the crash-on-fire bug with the bow. So I ignored the quest, planted some crops and made some tools and carried on with my play session.

I found the description for the spinning wheel to be a bit misleading, in that it specifically mentions wool and yarn. I only found out you could make fabric from plant fibres after I was told this by a friend.

Based on what I can recall mining 9 blocks with the stone pick in Starbound doesn't seem any faster or slower than mining 9 blocks with the copper pick in Terraria.

Not really, the OP was talking about when you first start out, and when you first start out in Terraria the pick axe you have is equally slow as what it is now in Starbound.

I have no problem with it, it's just the way these games start at the beginning. Mining cobblestone with a wooden pickaxe in Minecraft? Terriara as above... they are all like that. I like it too be honest, these games have such a good sense of progression. You can't progress without starting slow, and useless to begin with.

Cut down one tree, mine 3 stacks of cobblestone. Make a pickaxe, mine the remaining 2 stacks of cobblestone. Make an axe.

The problem is people not knowing this yet. But really, it takes less than 5 minutes to get the stone tools going.

I'm more annoyed by how little Copper and Silver pickaxes help in mining both ores and coal.

It's about what you expect. It seems that person have never played that kind of game before.
Also people might not have noticed, but the mining speed usually depends on the block that the ore is in. It's not like in terraria, when iron is mined with the same speed, both in dirst and in stone. In starbound, you can quickly get iron out of the san and you have to work hard to gather it from an obsidian wall.
