Cutting down trees/Mining ore at the start of the game is too time consuming

Are people really whining about that?
I take like 15mims to get a pickaxe and an axe.

    To make upgrades more rewarding.

By your logic, why not just give us resources as we walk over it? I dont mind having to struggle when starting the game, it makes resources more valuable and progression more pronounced.

Then edit your mining speed in steam/steamapps/common/Starbound/assets/items/tools/beamaxe and edit the fireTime.

The last sentence in the post of mine that you quoted is exactly why. Its the journey and remembering "Wow, i did some hard work to get where i am". You'll appreciate it more when you've got awesome stuff and then you wont ever need to worry about it again. Like i said. My opinion is leave it as it because it'll make people appreciate the stuff they have more.

It feels extremely slow at least the pickaxe does but I can't say if its any worse than minecraft or terraria.

I think the MM and stone tools could use a slight bump in speed.
-slight- as copper tools and up seem fine to me. I expect early tools to be bad but they where a little to into the annoying range of slow, those first two sets.

Edit: Maybe just the stone tools. I think tweaking the matter manipulator speed might keep people using it till copper, which I get the developers don't want to happen.

Felt shockingly sluggish when I first tried mining single blocks with the manipulator like I would in Terraria.

Didn't realize until 10 minutes in that I could clear 4 squares at once with the manipulator, heh. Getting my Stone Pickaxe and Axe made things considerably faster also, so I'm less worried about the time taken than I had been (thankfully crafting both uses wooden planks, so it doesn't take too long to get them).

Like I said in another thread, I hope that a upgraded matter manipulator can be crafted as an endgame tool. The tool has an aweosme feel to it and it is sad that it is so slow.

It's a problem if you can't find enough iron ore to make the anvil though. It took me about an hour to gather enough iron ore because of how slow the matter manipulator manipulates matter.

It's something that might be fixed with a line in the tutorial for the anvil - "you need to collect enough iron to get an anvil. You might consider making some tools to speed things up." - or something along those lines.

(That's a horribly written line, but you get the point). Something to make the average player go 'tools eh?' and check out the crafting menu - to gently lead players into realising that they really shouldn't be trying to mine iron ore with the matter manipulator.

Yea you can make a stone pick without the anvil and that triples your mining speed (faster speed and 3by3 blocks instead of 2by2). Crating all three stone tools asap is worth it.

I get an impression that some people would love if ore just fell from the sky right on top of their house.... Begginings are always slow.
I already have an extensive ammount of silver, copper and iron after about 3-4 hours of playing. You just have to dig and look for better ores deep underground. You can take anvil and furnance with you so you can upgrade your equipment as you go down.

Also, the bottom of the level is covered with lava and it's pretty much as far as you can go (maybe there's a method to swim in lava).

Because it feels a whole lot longer. Also if you are only mining one specific ore, it takes fucking 20 seconds. That's way too long to mine something. It should be like 10 secs maybe.

Upgrade your gear then. It doesn't take a lot of effort to go from stone to copper picks, and from there upwards. Dramatically spends up the time.

Also, I think people are dramatically overestimating how long mining actually takes.

I agree that it gives a really a bad first impression, when everything takes so long to do. I think it will discourage a lot of people from playing further.

May I then suggest a compromise?

Since tools have durability, why not give the player some low-durability tools right at the start? It would serve as a good introduction to the existence and use of tools, as well. Say, a special newbie pickaxe, axe and hoe that is as powerful as iron, and breaks after 100 hits. After which players are back to using the matter manipulator.

I think the general problem why many people are complaining about the very slow start, is the fact that it is simply not a very interesting mechanic. This is not a discussion about the game being too hard or too easy. Whether you need to hold down your mouse button for 10 or 20 seconds does not make a blind bit of difference in regards to the actual challenge of the game. Felling a try or sitting on a bunch on stone you are mining is not challenging and certainly not very interesting. I would be surprised to hear anyone say they enjoyed the first 30 minutes of the game more because it took a long time to mine the initial ressources.
Yes, I understand that the game wants to give a sense of progression and this is a very common and accepted mechanic for doing that in similar games. But the difference between your very first tools and the later ones does not need to be that large. You can easily cut the mining time of, for example, the matter manipulator in half and the pickaxes will still be an upgrade.
This all has nothing to do with impatience. Many people need to spend a lot of their time working and do not have that much time to spend on gaming. As a result, not everyone is willing to spend several hours on a game before it becomes "interesting". As it stand right now, I agree that the game takes a little bit too long to really pick up right now and I think it would serve well to give a few more interesting things closer to the starting experience. But I honestly totally do that expect to happen, there are just many, many things still missing in the game. It was a similar situation with Terraria. From the first release to the most recent update, the general pacing and starting experience has improved dramatically without negatively affecting the late game at all.

I have to say, this sounds like a fair alternative as well.

I thought the same, until I crafted a pickaxe and an axe.

I'm perfectly fine with one tool that's indestructible but takes a very long time, ad having some much faster tools that will break eventually.

In my opinion the speed of digging and chopping tree's is just fine. If u make it faster then why would you upgrade to a stone pickaxe or axe?

Because it's so slow, that even if you make it a bit faster, stone tools will still be better... No one is saying that it should be as good as the stone tools, as that would remove any incentive to get them. Just a bit faster than it is now.

Okay, then I agree. Say like 150% of the speed now would be better no?
