Cutting down trees/Mining ore at the start of the game is too time consuming

The amount of time it takes to chop down trees with the matter manipulator is pretty infuriating, I realize that it will be a lot easier once you get better tools, however it is far too much. It is pretty discouraging. Same goes for getting ores.

    To be clear:
This is just a suggestion that if followed I believe will improve the general reception of the game.

I can see a lot of people that don't have much knowledge of the game getting confused, and wonder if their matter manipulator is even working.

    Thoughts?

    I agree.

I guess that's why we should build tools as soon as possible.

once you have the tools, there is no problem... so just get the tools, isn't that hard ;)

Well its challenging I will say that, and while I agree its a bit frustrating to get started not sure I would want them to make it too easy either? Perhaps a difficulty slider (unless there is one and I missed it) would be a good compromise? :)

    Mining speed =/= challenge.

Slower speeds merely make you sit there longer. Challenges your patience, maybe...

I know the tools aren't hard to get, my point still stands - it's pretty off-putting. It gives a bad first impression of the game. I think the game would benefit from reducing it a small amount. :)

cutting down trees and mining takes way too long. There is no challenge in sitting there holding a button.

There's just no reason for how long it takes other then for it to take long.

While we're on that matter, it takes way too long to heal too. Starting out in the game, you get almost 0 healing options other than a bed.

It doesn't take that long to make an axe or pickaxe though..

mining ore still takes too long even with a pickaxe. It feels like such a grind.

Tools make it all better, but I agree that is rather slow in the beginning.

I think it's meant to show you that by having basic tools, it will take longer to do anything. Thus, you should upgrade to the specific types of tools needed (axe, pickaxe, etc.). If it were made easier, players may choose to only use the manipulater for most of the early game.

U just need a few trees and some cobblestone to get a pick, then u can get loads of cobble for the rest of the tools, its really not that bad

How do you? I haven't got past the collecting iron to smelt stage because i keep dying due to the bow thing.

The trees aren't so bad the cobble is. For the cobble quest reward, it should give additional cobble. Enough to make a cobble pickaxe

I can live with the trees being that slow, but the speed of cobble in comparison to dirt is a bit too much. Also It took me a while to realize I was actually able to cut vines with the MM, I think that if anything should be a fast job.

A little slow I agree, but not game breaking. The challenge of being so gimped early on is kinda nice for a change.

My problem was, despise cracks, shaking and particles being displayed to tell the player "stuff is being done here", the amount of time is seriously misleading, based on those...

Any thoughts about adding a small, semi-transparent progress bar floating somewhere nearby the cursor? Just to give players a rough idea on how effective are the current tools being used.

I actually like the slower pacing. In Terraria having your first "home base" built didn't feel like as much of an achievement as it should have. In Starbound, I'm actually quite proud of my little hovel already :)

I would like to note that witbh a stone pick you are mining a 3 x 3 area at once, why would they decrease the mining speed thats a huge amount of area to be mining at once i think the speeds are just fine

3x3 area? I think with the matter manipulator it's 2x2 area. Boy. I've still got some where to go!
