There is nothing better than fully customizing your character in a game! We will spend hundreds of hours (or more) with them, make that system robust! Customization is a must! I would love for Starbound to provide as much character customization as possible. Tons of playable races, skin color options, hair types/colors, eye types/color, height variations, starting gear color, all of that would be great! Compounded with showing whatever armor/weapons you have equipped in-game! (Capes would be jolly as well!) And also, any and all gear should be usable by any and all character types! (Maybe with very limited exceptions?) But keep in mind, variation keeps us entertained! There is nothing I hate more than seeing the same weapons/armor over and over masked with different color palettes. There should be many, many different types of gear! Especially in a game that generates unique planets! (New and exciting gear would be one incentive to explore new planets!) Vanity and unique collectible items are amazing as well! Obviously, 'social' slots for gear would be necessary. That gives us the option to look however we want while still retaining important stats for our characters! Last but not least, a dye system would be a nice addition! Dying gear that you have is yet another way to define yourself from someone who might have the same gear as you! Thanks for reading!
Borderlands did this quite well. Randomly select parts for a weapon to make sure you have a good variety.
Well, what I was thinking is that gear could be comprised of pieces, and then you can collect the pieces or blueprints for those and create them, and then modify the gun to have a faster rate or more damage or other things like that. Kinda like what Wilcol said. I can't wait for the point where I can take a laser cannon thing and have it have a reaaaaally long charge time, but it's like a railcannon when it fires. Orbital bombardment, anyone?
The developers already have generally agreed that this is going to happen. "We asked the developers on a 1 to 10 scale on how we could customize our characters. They gave us an 8." (Rock, Paper, Shotgun)
Basically what Admiral Obvious said, this game is going to be jam packed with customisation so there's no need to worry about that! Basically everything you said has been confirmed to be in the game. The one thing I will add is that you won't be able to customise your characters height though. That would just create far too many problems in a pixel based game to make it even worth trying to implement it. Read this for a lot of things that have been confirmed so far
Thank you very much for sharing! I appreciate it! And the height thing makes sense. I keep forgetting that pixels are so mathematically driven and have to be calculated accurately or everything looks off.
